I was trying to use the focus\re-compose technique but I find the button hard to regulate in the 'half press' position.

Weird.
I heard that there are differences with the Mju-II's shutter button.
Mine was somewhat 'wobbly', but I found doing the half-press really easy with it.Was going to recommend the hidden spot-meter function of the camera, though you need to do the half-press thing in that mode as well of course.
I do miss mine a lot, but am not willing to pay the hipster prices they are going for these days..

You can focus>recompose (on half-press) with the mjuII.
Bonus fact ... apparently it's got 3 focus areas (the centre, then left and right).
