try and get discrete mudguard mounts (on the inside of stays)
i'd still get a rack mount for when this is no longer your nicest bike and becomes a workhorse
it's a pretty similar spec to my commuto x bike - though I used hope bits and bobs as opposed to chris king
pacenti make some good tubeless disc rims
definitely go tubeless
get enve stem to match the seatpost?

Just had a look at their site. Looks like a good frame to base a do it all bike upon. The Stooshie is going on the list. Cheers. Look forward to progress.

Good idea with the discrete mudguard mounts, I'll add it to the "questions to ask" list.
I have rear rack mounts on my Roberts and I've used them twice in 4 years.
I have a Wildcat bar bag and saddle bag that I will use if I go touring on this which, in all honestly, will be nowhere as near as often as I'd like.Did consider an Enve stem but then I'd have to get matching handlebars and I'm quite set on the shape of the Thomsons.
Tubeless it is then! Just out of curiosity; how do you go about fixing roadside punctures with a tubeless set up and roughly how often do you have to change/maintain the tubeless sealant?

See the tubeless thread
Hvave had to put a tube into a tubeless set up 3 times - each time when a cut occurred that was bigger than 3mm. (Actually once the side wall split).
Top up every 3 months or so.

Excellent project. Have long admired Shand (being Scottish myself) as they're one of the few fully custom homeland frame builders. Would be interested to see what they think of your material choice and if they're happy going along that route.
Still in love with your matching Roberts but please keep us updated with this one! T -

Lovely looking bike.
Enve stems look rubbish on steel framed bikes......
I'd go White Industries or DT Hubs
I'd also go a DECENT bike fitter before spending a chunk of money on something with a huge head tube. They might/should be able to set you up into a lower, more comfortable position. You might have already tried this, in which case ignore me! -

Aw boy, aw boy, been keeping my eyes on Shand frames, subbed++. Can't wait to see the progress.

I went and visited Steven at his workshop today and I was very impressed!
Everything is done in house including painting and it was incredible to see bikes in all different stages of production in the same room.
We talked for a good hour and a half and I got measured up.
It seems that I am in-between a large and an extra large frame set so it looks like I will need to go custom (which I kinda thought after looking at the geo charts on their website).
I have most of my height in my legs; the top of my saddle sits 840 mm above the centre of the bottom bracket and my reach is around 590. T0 achieve the drop I want the head tube is going to be around 220. Steven is going to send over a CAD drawing in a few days.We also chatted about about stainless stays which, due to the fact that I want to be able to run large tyres, is a no go. In no way a deal breaker, just though it would have been a cool feature.
10-12 weeks lead time.

I think on a fatter tubed steel frame Enve can look good. Enve stems look awful with a stack of spacers below them and I'm only going to have one 5 mm spacer below plus a chunky head tube.
Not too keen on WI stuff, but they are lovely.
I've had a couple of bike fits done before and I am taking measurements from a bike I was fitted on and using those to help plan the fit on this bike.

Sounds like you're all covered then! Not a bad lead time either.

Final geometry and details decided on. Deposit paid.
Here we go, then...

There were a few changes to my original ideas.
The dropouts have now been changed from the modular style dropouts to Paragon Machine Works hooded dropouts as I'm sure this will be running mechanical gears forever and not hub gears.
Steerer tube will be left 20mm longer than I asked for so that I can try it out at that height before removing spacers.
Colour will be a matte olive green with (hopefully) gloss black accents inside the fork and on the Shand logo.
Decided to go all Enve everything.
So that's it then, now I just have to wait out the 10-12 weeks just in time for me to miss summer and get it at the start of Scottish autumn but hey ho!

Mudguard and rack fittings?
-
• #15
Mudguards, yes! It will have PDW ones. I had a feel in their showroom and they made my SKS feel like cheap tat.
Rack, no. I have bags to strap to my frame for that.
-
• #16
discrete braze ons for the guards, so on the inside of the stays?
-
• #17
enve fork with guards?
-
• #18
The mounts for the guards are attached on the top of the hood of the dropout. I've seen it on another of their bikes and, while its not hidden, it does look neat and tidy.
It's a TRP fork with mudguard attachments built in. While I'm sure that Enve one is lovely, that mudguard does not look at all practical.

Shand are running a couple of weeks behind. Frame is currently being fabricated and should be painted by the end of next week.
Much excited.

I've always loved shand bikes.
This is gonna be nice!

Bugger. There's no stock of HED Belgium Plus rims anywhere so I'm now looking at getting this mid November.
Unless I want to change my rim choice. Which I don't.
-
• #23
Also, Chris King don't do the R45 disk front hub in a 15mm bolt thru axel so I will have to get an ISO front hub instead. No biggie.
-
• #24
And Compass are out of tan wall Bon Jon Pass tyres so I'm going black.
To be honest, tan walls will look black anyway after one Scottish winter.

Velo Vitality have Extralight tan Bon Jons in, mega £££ now though
As I'm getting older and fatter, and as work commitments seem ever increasing, I've decided that a new bike is in order. My Roberts road bike preforms exceptionally, however I've been lusting after something with a little less saddle to bar drop for a while and I would like to see if I could build something up a little lighter. Not to mention fat tyres and disk brakes.
Step forward: Shand Stooshie endurance road bike.
This is a standard Stooshie.
This bike will be the result of everything I do and don't like of my Roberts being transferred onto a new bike, the aim to create something that I can roll around on all day, in all conditions, and still be comfortable.
I'm off the visit Steven at Shand Friday Morning but for now I have the following ideas floating around;
Reynolds 853 main triangle, stainless stays (possibly down tube too)
TRP carbon fork
Black band option for cut out decals (to see stainless underneath)
Matte sage green colour, stem to match
Three bottle bosses
Front and rear mudguard bosses only, no rear rack
Standard bottom bracket, no eccentric
Thru axel not QR
Components
Chris King headset
Thomson X4 120 black 0 degree
Thomson carbon road handlebar 46mm
Brooks cambium rubber bar tape black
Shimano RS685 Levers/callipers
Chris King hubs (R45 Disc Centerlock?)
HED Belgium plus disk
Tubeless?
28/32 spokes? stainless spokes, not black
Compass Bon Jon pass 35c tan extralight tyres
Thru axel
PDW mudguards
Enve stealth seatpost 25mm setback
Thomson seatpost collar
Brooks Carbon Cambium black
Shimano DuraAce groupset
King Cage titanium cages x2
I may have to go custom for geometry as I'm gonna need a stonker of a head tube (I'm 188cm with LONG legs) and I don't wan't any more than 10mm of spacers; one thing that really pisses me off about the Roberts is that I need so many goddamn spacers and so much seat post.
Hopefully this will be a (relatively) light build that is comfortable and suitable for the odd bit of light back packing.
