How many times have these been round Rutland....?

As in the race? None actually.

There's the forum rule that says something along the lines of items must be advertised here exclusively - so if you want to post 'em here you should take down other ads / ebay and whatnot.

I read that fairly bizarre and somewhat ambiguous rule and interpreted it as meaning you couldn't post an advert here simply with a link to the same advert posted elsewhere so as to direct traffic away from LFGSS. Apparently the rule is in place to "reduce the facelessness of the classifieds marketplace" and build "forum atmosphere" . . . whatever that means. Was that interpretation incorrect?
Any who does business with me will realise I'm all for building relationships and conversing. I've got 2 adverts on here which are also replicated on numerous other sites, and they've been up for several days. If someone feels obliged to delete them at this stage then please do so, but I really fail to understand what doing so would achieve. Rules are rules though, questioning them would be punishable by death (or the subjecting of sexual organs to a strong electric current, so I hear)!

The rule isn't ambiguous, it's pretty clear... only advertised here.
Why?
- To reduce spam on forums
- To reduce unmaintained adverts on one site because the item sold on another
- Because people are perfectly able to search multiple sites
That's it.
If something is advertised on here, you know it is available and that the advert is maintained, because it isn't advertised elsewhere.
I'm not trying to silo anything to build a forum atmosphere, our atmosphere is as thick as a fog already. I recognise people visit lots of sites, and I embrace that... why do they need to read the same advert 10 times because they (and everyone else) visit more than 1 site.
Basically... it's spam isn't it. As soon as a single item is advertised across many sites, how is it not spam? And it adds nothing to any site when it's added to every site.
It improves all forums to not have spam, and so we enforce it by simply treating those that cross-post as spammers.
Is there part of that which isn't clear?
Oh... and yes, other people can post your advert, in the "ebay and classifieds found" thread. There we celebrate the good shit that is advertised elsewhere and point potentially interested parties towards it. But you cannot do this, because again... then it's spam.

It's really worth saying: These rules were created by consensus agreement in the early days of the forum.
They were not arbitrarily created and forced on people, and there was a lot of debate at the time about how we wanted to handle spam as soon as it was obvious we had a problem.
We've also gone back and had that debate several times since.
It doesn't require your agreement, the vast majority of people who use this site daily want the classifieds to not have spam. Spam defined as "unsolicited adverts posted across multiple sites". They also do want a well maintained classifieds section. The rules basically focus on those things.
Feel free to question them, but realise that this site isn't commercially owned, there are no paid adverts, it's supported by donations, and almost everything it is has been shaped through (what feels like endless) open debate and agreement.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. I found it ambiguous even if you didn't (probably has something to do with you writing the rule) and I disagree with your suggestion that people readily shop around on different sites. For example, I do most of my selling on Facebook, and I know that despite the fact that I'm a member of 9 suitable groups facilitating buying and selling, many buyers are only a member of 1 or possible 2 of those. Hence, I advertise on all of them. Likewise, I advertise on BikeRadar and timetriallingforum, because the audience isn't really the same yet both are interested and indeed buy what I advertise. Spam doesn't seem to be a problem worthy of resolution on those fora despite the absence of any equivalent rule.
I'd take everywhere else over here so feel free to delete.

Too true. I also would've given up the fight a long time ago if I had to use the software they use.
Your bikes are gorgeous btw... I do hope you sell them and get a good price for them.

You'll be sorely, sorely missed.
Please, please, please, won't you reconsider.
Stay. Do.

Oh, so this must be the friendly forum atmosphere that brought me to LFGSS.

Perhaps, I just think demanding exclusivity is a good way of coming across as somewhat insular despite its perceived benefits and those on the inside feeling satisfied.
Thanks, likewise. -

I think the term you're looking for is "Ferociously Snooty™".
-
• #16
Although, wasn't it to flog a pricey bike & wheelset that you came here?
Stay though. Engage. Share. Don just mug it off as a place to sell stuff.
-
• #17
Yes, quite. Just been trying to help answer some unresolved topics, as I do on any forum.

Perhaps, I just think demanding exclusivity is a good way of coming across as somewhat insular despite its perceived benefits and those on the inside feeling satisfied.
Thing is... you're going to sell the bike and wheels. They're great, good stuff always sells. Be it via eBay, Facebook, TTF, BikeRadar... they'll sell.
So you're not gaining anything from it being on here, and nor are we (community, the collective mass of anarchic cyclists on here). Because we really do visit lots of other sites (though as a theme we are anti-Facebook, it's that anarchic quality shining through).
The rule wasn't really created by the community with great bikes in mind... because that stuff is super rare.
The rule was really created with the mass of adverts of really average stuff, and given that we are a fixed and single-speed forum but with a pervy attitude towards other niche bikes... those run-of-the-mill hybrids and MTBs really have no place on here.
The hard bit: We've got this perfectly good rule, that insulates us from all the crap, but occasionally means that an advert for a really nice bike has to be removed too.
But that's where I step in and basically tell the community... this is the rule you wanted, and I'm not going to stray into the minefield of subjective stuff ("is this a nice enough bike to keep, even though we'd normally call it spam because it's a cross-post?"). So I enforce unambiguously, consistently. Even for the nice bikes.
Our loss, and to some extent your loss. But the greater gain of a vibrant forum that doesn't have all that other crap and spam. Huge win. Totally surpasses the loss of a few good sellers and a few really nice bikes.

You're too kind.
If it helps you feel better - higher end road bikes don't sell much on here. It's not quite the right crowd.

You sir, have not hung out enough in the Current Projects forum. The fixie-skidders have all gone roadie or cyclo-tourists.

Well that escalated quickly

How did you get:
"probably has something to do with you writing the rule"From:
"These rules were created by consensus agreement in the early days of the forum." -
• #23
Very well put indeed, for the greater good (hoods, round table and torch light from below, etc.). However, the bike's been advertised for almost a month and is not at what I believe (perhaps wrongly) to be an excellent price, yet it is still here.
-
• #24
Re-read the context of that phrase, you'll find I was referring to the perceived ambiguity of the rule phrasing not whether the generation and enforcement of the rules was agreed by consensus.

Wheels are ridiculously priced average shite anyway. Probably the reason you've advertised all over but not sold.
