2 speed is fine, actually any of the gears option work fine.

We have the new 2017 Brompton, the handlebar look much more compact and curvy, and the shifter are completely integrated, I like it, keep it tidy and less likely to get damaged.

What about the bell? Is it integrated with the shifter as well or can it be attached to the brake lever? I'm on a SS so want to fit it to mine, the new m-bar in silver is what I want.
@diable I saw the bell on the original leak, which was taken down so I can't remember what it was attaching too. Asking Ed for clarification.
UPDATE: Found a picture - yeah it is integrated into the shifter.

The bell is attached to the brake lever (2017 model).
The brake lever have two small mount to enable you to retrofit a shifter/bell, this way if the shifter broke, you don't need to replace the entire thing, much less having to removed the grip to access to it.
It make a lots of sense without having to have different brake/shifter system, just one levers, if it build as an M3L, fit the 3 speed shifter onto the lever, very economical.
Also, speaking of grip, Brompton now come with lock-on grip as well, which would be more handy in the previous generation.

That's the old one.

I'm resurrecting my old Brompton from under the stairs. All seems good apart from the cables. Any advice on what to replace the original ones with. original Brompton replacements seem overpriced.

All, my front dynamo headlamp went flying off down the road and now need a new one. It is a Schmidt and Son front hub dynamo. What options do I have that do not interfere with the fold?
TIA

Just the cable be fine, but the housing have to be the exact length

It's not old-old, but it been around as recently as the seatclamp rear triangle lock out

@edscoble if what you said is right, Evans should get told off by Brompton for selling me a marathon plus...
They didn't have the non-plus in stock, I really needed to get this sorted and having had marathon plus for years without problem (it does indeed put a bit of pressure on the hinge when folded, but negligible compared to pressure when riding the bike, and it clears the rear frame comfortably...) I went for it...
That aside, why a large supplier like Evans wouldn't get the memo... -

Evans did get the memos, we still sell them, but we won't fit them.
The biggest issues is the clearance between the tyres and the drive side chainstay, as the Marathon plus is a little bigger than the Marsthon/Brompton's own.
Or get Tannus, I have ridden a customer's Brompton with that solid tyres and it's the worst thing imaginable but for those who want low maintenance it's a good option.

Got it. The guy had no clue though, because I asked ("Do you have the marathon in stock, as I've heard the marathon plus are no longer recommended by Brompton?" He looked at me as if I was talking another language)... but that's all they had, that and Brompton's own brand, which felt a bit too lightweight...
Really doubt it's going to touch the stays as I'm pretty sure that's a "plus" I'm currently running. If it works i won't be looking at replacement for a good while... -

The mechanics (supposedly) are aware of this, because the majority of them attend the training that Brompton provided, which is where we learn about this issues amongst other stuff.
The shop floor staff, may not know this, so every now and then they sell Marathon Plus without knowing this, it's usually tricky because they always get new part timers every now and then.

Here is the new brakes levers, as you can see it got new mount to allow the fitting of the shifter and bell.

What's the new shifter like?
-
• #2294
Bit weird, but can get used to it easily.
It work almost like a trigger shifter, which is defintely better than the old way.
-
• #2295
Both, the 2 speed work similar to the old one, but the 3 speed adopted a trigger shift style (like the lever spring back to original position at each shift rather than continue till it hit the 3rd shift).
-
• #2296
I actually prefer the Brompton one as it's easier to operate with just your thumb.
-
• #2297
Oh that SA shifter, thought you were talking about the old one.
-
• #2298
That SA shifter is the best thing I've done to my Brompton! Nothing so wrong with the original one but it really didn't look "nice" enough for the bike...

Original Brompton or Original SA?

Original Brompton or Original SA?
I meant original SA. Nothing wrong with it (never failed me), but it belongs to older bikes... On an old Brompton, kept in its early 90s patina, it's ok, but Bromptons look a bit slicker now, black parts, etc... When I introduced external BB and a much nicer crankset than the Brompton one (older version without detachable chainring) I suddenly really felt the old SA lever had to go. I'm keeping it preciously, it's still relevant if I built a 3 speed city/shopping bike at some point...
I've been using a 2 speed all year for 3 years doing about 2000 miles commuting in all weathers. I do not keep it sparkly clean, it has never given me any problems.
