Isn't it supposed to have 90 deg of free travel before any steering action starts?

Don't over tighten it, make sure you have no tight spots going lock to lock, a bit extra freeplay in the straight ahead position is normal.
Measured at the steering wheel, 75mm for non rack and pinion
13mm for rack and pinion

I think the beetle has just become my favourite car. So damn easy to work on.
Had a loose connection to one of my tail lights. 20 minutes, a screwdriver and 8mm wrench later and it's fixed...
Might try to sort out the play in the steering after lunch.
