Cogent analysis of the polis' and courts' utter fail in punishing dangerous driving and suggestions on how to improve things:

I think a lot of us don't really want gaol time for dangerous driving without major consequences, just the morons off the roads. -

Review of recent changes in MCR, includes
Judging by what I saw, most people on bikes are ignoring the new infrastructure and choosing to ride on the road and many pedestrians are walking in the cycleways.
Gotta agree I find the road route past some of these modified stops the easiest path too. I acknowledge that the lanes aren't primarily built to encourage riders like me to ride but those who currently don't.

Campaigning groups seem optimistic about Khan's vision for cycling. Better than Boris?
http://www.bikebiz.com/news/read/boris-was-good-for-cycling-sadiq-will-be-better-say-campaigners/019528 -

Khan doesn't seem to know or understand much about cycling (claiming cycle lane need to be narrower to smooth traffic flow), the rest of his policy sound better beside this.
I hope the campaigners encourage him to provide more than Boris did.

If anyone's at home, there's a discussion on The Wright Stuff (C5) regarding licences and tests for cyclists shortly.

So it was stated by Sam Gymiah in yesterday's commons debate on dangerous driving
"I reaffirm this Government’s commitment to consult on the penalties for dangerous driving offences. That consultation will begin before the end of the year. Blameless victims and their families must have total confidence in our criminal justice system. To those people, our message is clear: this Government are committed to making sure that the sentences for those who kill or seriously injure other people on our roads fit the crime. I look forward to setting out our plans later this year."

So definitely some campaigning mileage when that comes out.... -

Sky News are discussing the West Midlands initiative at 10:30 today. Expect florid anecdotes about how one time a cyclist did something or other.
-
• #1638
Ah, they've gone with "Are drivers being victimised?".

• #1639
That was shit. It was Angela "my husband is a cyclist"Epstein. The only bright spot was the subtitles that said "Cyclists campaign for psychopaths".

angela epstein. the M&S katie hopkins. awful human being.

I'm trying to think of an analogy but, say a campaign was launched to stop the bullying of fat people, say. Would Epstein pop up and declare "It works both ways , sometimes fat people are annoying"?

Every cyclists who die due to the left turning lorry is now at fault apparently.

This is fairly standard, the 'Road Safety' lobby have been doing similar things for decades. It's designed to scare people off cycling, not to make them 'safer'.

Interesting story on St Thomas' hospital and their opposition to floating bus stops on Westminster Bridge. https://cyclelondoncity.blogspot.co.uk/2016/09/weird-goings-on-westminer-bridge-bus.html

There's a floating bus stop too just near the eye hospital on Manchester's Oxford Road working fine.
Each time I approach this one I have to weigh up many factors and decide if it's appropriate to use the lane here. At peak travel times it is often quicker and safer (IMO) to pass the waiting busses using the road. /csb
