if you do use the canal route make sure you don't miss the bridge over the canal about 8k out of Ghent and end up heading south rather than north west. It makes a big difference, especially if you're on your way back to pick up the car after the Tour of flanders sportive. I'd imagine this may be a problem, not that I have done this of course, or ended up having to retrace 20k, then send someone off on their own to get the car because it got too late and they were the only ones with enough left in the tank to make it in time, that would never happen :)
