Which Tyres?

  • It's an unusual wear, you could try and speak to the shop you brought them from, but with over 2,000 miles, it's not unusual for tyres to come unbonded from the carcass.

  • The more I read about these new Corsa's......

  • I've spoken to sigmasport on Twitter and they've suggested I email them so I'll see if anything comes of it. I was replacing them anyway so I'm not too fussed...

  • 2000 miles on my corsa g+ with at least another 500-1000 on them judging by the wear. Maybe early runs were inconsistent in terms of QC?

  • 28c Gravelkings for fall/winter commuting over 70% tarmac 20% cobbles 10% light gravel?
Frame does not take anything bigger than 28c with guards and want something really grippy.

  • I'm wavering between 26c and 28c in the Gravel Kings. Want the wider but unsure they will adequately clear my 'guards (SKS Chromo 35). Anyone measured inflated width on a 17mm internal rim?

Riding a 2010 Genesis Equilibrium with Shimano RS500 wheelset.

  • Want to use my Caadx on the road for winter, but the Sammy Slicks on there feel bloody slow. What are my options if I want the following:

    • Fast-ish
    • 30-35c, or a 28 that runs big
    • Cheap-ish
  • kojak, SJS Cycles have some for cheap.

  • They the same as the ones on CRC, that are a few quid less?

  • Sigma sport have very nicely agreed to replace my corsa g+ because the tread came away from the casing after 1500 or so miles. I wasn't expecting them to, so dead pleased.

I was told by one member of staff who jumped on the email chain with the person who was arranging the return that it was my fault they'd delaminated because I was running them at 55psi on 25mm rims despite the advised '85psi' written on the side of the tyre. I did try to explain that 85psi on 25mm rims with a 25c tyre would be nigh on unrideable, and the rims were only guaranteed to 60psi but he accused me of using 'mismatched components'.

I should be getting a new set in the post though, which is pretty amazing customer service tbf.

  • I did try to explain that 85psi on 25mm rims with a 25c tyre would be nigh on unrideable.

    Why?

  • They come up narrow, on a 20mm internal wide rim they were 32-ish.

  • I am also interested in how 25mm tyres at 85psi would be unrideable.

  • Also calling it a component mismatch sounds fair. There is no pressure you could achieve where manufacturer requirements of both tyre and rim would be satisfied. Free tyres sounds pretty cheeky.

  • 55psi in 25 seems very low. Are you a sparrow? I never used to get much more than 1500 miles out of a Corsa SC on the rear so I think you've done well.

  • I don't agree - wider rims mean lower pressure surely, manufacturer advice is based on standard width rims afaik.

  • enjoying the change from my sport contact 35s to marathon supremes 32s. feels like a whole new bike..

anyone want a pair of lightly used continental sport contact 35s?

  • Perhaps unrideable is an over statement, but on the occasions when I put 85psi in them to seat the tyres/give them a bit of a stretch they were rock solid. I'd not want to ride them on the road, for sure.

I weigh 74kg and at 55-60psi they felt like normal tyres, any higher and they felt like solid rubber. I have Veloflex corsa now at 55psi and they're spot on. I put 60psi in on the rollers and they sit on top of the rollers properly without deforming, something that I've seen happen on normal rims at anything below 90psi, so I don't see why any more than that is needed.

  • Nope, 74kg. Tyre drop was the same as 90 or so psi on a normal rim. They are absurdly wide rims, but I've used them with gp4000s and Schwalbe one at around the same pressure.

Fwiw, I wasn't expecting free tyres and didn't push for it at all. I was returning them because I wasn't sure if it was a manufacturing fault, I certainly didn't expect a refund/replacement.

  • No one goes FULL scoble ..

  • Ha ha. Am I way off here then? Wide rims means more volume means lower psi, no? Rollers is the test for me - too low and they get all squelchy and sticky but 60psi is spot on, even a bit hard. Definitely too much for tarmac. Same with all tyres I've tried on these rims.

The rims are these btw http://www.superstarcomponents.com/en/arc22-ultrawide-wheelset.htm which I think are rebadged Kinlin xr22 (?)
Superstar state a 60psi max, are they just pulling that out their arse? seems a weird thing to say for a road rim if it's not necessary.

Edit: a bit of googling suggests I should be running them higher, so maybe I've just been kidding myself...

  • Oh right, I just scored a very cheap pair of them in 28c so hopefully they'll be close enough to that

  • There are no 28c kojaks ..

  • They've come unused off a C'dale Bad Boy
