It's possible, but it would take a while - it's a complex piece of kit - and there wouldn't be an obvious incentive for doing so as it was extremely likely that this valuable piece of equipment was under Russian supervision at all times.
Hitting a civilian airliner wasn't an operation error (if anything the opposite) but an intelligence failure.
