What is the difference? They look identical. What does the M or T stand for?

Check the compatibility map, Shimano trekking groups tend to use big chainrings compared with MTB groups, so the shift levers might be designed to work with a road FD.
There may be a different front shifter. But these are just rear shifters.
Also I thought the pull on a road or mtb front shiter was about the same. Where triple=triple etc...
