  • Overnight jaunt around the Isle of Wight. What more is there to say? A moonlit climb of Blackgang, there's nothing better. Join one and all!

    General rules:

    • be self sufficient, but don't be a boy scout either.
    • this is 'fixed first' ride, you'll be riding with fixed ridiers so hold all your pace into a rise and be aware that fixed riders need to maintain their precious cadence.
    • have lights, good lights, to see by. If you cant descend at 60kph in pitch black get something better.
    • be cool, not cold. Take layers, but don't over do it. Temps are likely 8-10c evening and 12-15c daytime.
  • sorely tempted... I have the Saturday free if I don't go to Brighton.

How much does the ferry cost?

  • How much does the ferry cost?

    £22.60

  • Is it necessary to book a ferry place in advance or do we just got a ticket there? Guess it's not that busy at that time?

  • Man, this sounds ace and I'm just down the road in Fareham. Just need to check there's nothing planed that ive forgotten

  • Should just be turn up and go at the ferry, never seen it so full you can't get on. I would be inclined to get a flexible return, both for the train and boat, there could be a few factors affecting when we catch the return, not least of all hanging out at the seaside if it's a nice day.

  • To ease/cause confusion this is the same event...

Just posted in a different place.

  • Choose appropriate gear ratios you lot

  • ...Or pedal harder. TBH if we go clockwise Blackgang isn't that steep, it's like a nice, continental climb for about 1km (can't actually remember length but it's over quick enough).

  • On gear ratios: I'll do it on 46/16 if that's what everyone else is on. Fair is fair.

  • Yeah I'm in, seems like a good reason to buy some new lights.

    Gear ratio - 48/17

  • I'll be 39x16 but on 35mm so 66'-ish

  • I see that you have a link to the ferry terminal but the event starts and finishes at Ryde.
The ferry does not go to Ryde but to Fishbourne, the catamaran that leaves from the end of the harbour station goes to Ryde pier. Maybe you need to clarify this, could get confusing.

  • Absolutely sure. You posted the timetable for the cat.
I do this journey on a very regular basis.

  • Yep, the cat goes from the ramp down at end of the platform. You've tagged the car ferry terminal.

  • Fair enoug, please could you let me know the postcode for the correct terminal so I can update it. Thanks both.

  • PO1 3EB

You just walk to the end of the platform at Portsmouth harbour station and it right there.

  • updated, thanks.

  • This is very exciting!

  • does anyone fancy meeting up a little earlier for some food? I'll bring lock(s) and leave them at the port farside to collect on the way back.

  • I'm already looking at weather forecasts.
Looks like a nice high pressure system dominating the second half of next week.

  • high pressure system dominating the second half

nah, I'll be taking it easy, nothing too pacy.

  • One of these threads should be for counter-clockwise and one for clockwise. :)

(Thinking of coming, although Friday evening is technically booked. Hm.)
