The pinnacle which I seek. No interest in anything other than SRAM. The only shifting that does it for me.

Now there is a clue ;)

Good luck finding sram stock. I'd go Apex 1 as the weight diff is minor.

Crankset is bit heavy which you can upgrade later.

Plus no one has done Apex 1 successfully on Tumblr yet.

    Rowwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

  • Does anyone know of a UK retailer which might have Sugino black chainring bolts in stock? I've treated myself to some Sugino 75DD black cranks with a black Zen chainring for my new track bike, but the cranks come with silver chainring bolts, which will never do. Must be Sugino, obvs, otherwise I anticipate fierydeathcrash.

  • thanks, lovely but ever so slightly over planned budget...

  • They do have some options for hydro force on bike24. 170mm cranks + 50T ring for example.

  • Tensile stuff does look erm, hi-tech. do you have any experience with this brand/shop?

  • I think @umop3pisdn has them on his hill climb bike. No personal experience

  • I have their track hub, but sold under a different manufacturer. No experience of the trials hubs but expect they're some sort of Far East hub rebranded.

    Halo?

  • Would a Claris 8spd STI control a current nexus 8 ?

  • 42t with an 11-36 will take you up anything maybe even loaded.

Not loaded in the sense of rack and panniers, no way.

  • I don't believe so. For my alfine the cable pull is completely different. My solution can be seen in this post - https://www.lfgss.com/comments/12571843/

Trigger shifter on one of those bar extender things. Worked surprisingly well, could just about shift from the hoods.

  • Definitely not. The cable pull between 4th and 5th is nearly double the rest. Versa (?) make an (expensive) STI style lever for Alfine, or jtek do a (very expensive) bar end shifter.

  • @hamrack shame. Braddy shimano san. The bike comes with a bar end, will just live with that.

  • well I'd never know .. maybe 40t when loaded then.

  • A 40t with a 11-42 10 speed cassette is idea for touring if you're moderately fit.

  • 42x36 is plenty. 31 GI. Same as 34x29. That's massive!

I dunno. Do what you gotta do.

    On a loaded touring bike?

bikepacking/light touring, would be enough, but still gonna be hard going.

  • If I remember rightly, I toured around Europe with two panniers, Carradice and tent with 34x28 as lowest gear... Although it may have been 34x30.

  • So did I, but would have preferred slightly more range in mountain territory, a 1-1 gearing would make it work.

    Abet with panniers tho.

  • To be fair, I've never ridden up a mountain in my life. Like in so many areas, you can safely ignore my opinions.

  • Up is the shit direction, I wouldn't bother.

  • Not seeing a downside to this scenario...

    :P

  • I am swapping all the bolts on my bike to stainless as the climate where I am is crazy and everything is rusting up. Any recommendations for stainless QR's? The ones I have are rusting too, they're rubbish anyway and the discs always rub so if I can improve that too would be great. In fact, is there any reason to keep QR's? would it be better to swap them for stainless bolts?

  • on a related note, I bought some stainless M5 hex bolts from clas ohlson. Will they be fine? I am assuming I don't need bike stem specific M5 bolts? they look exactly the same
