Front rack suggestions

  • Im assuming its the same size as my custom one, a can squeeze a pair of my size 11 vans in the base side by side

  • A mate of mine has an Arkose (not sure which model). He asked me if he could fit a front rack like mine (canti and brake bridge mount).

As the Arkose is disc (not canti) I said he couldn't. From what I can tell the Arkose doesn't have a front drilling on the brake bridge (only rear, for mudguards) but they do have low riser bosses (he's using them for mudguards) approx mid way up the fork blades.

Does anyone know of a front rack that would work for him?

I don't think he wants a large flat top rack (like the pizza rack) more something for a small shoebox sized box to sit on. Roughly like a traditional rear pannier rack but for the front.

  • Anyone has a Pelago communter front rack? I bought a brand new one but it doesn't come with any instruction (should it) and I am little confused about how to put it together... can anyone send me some links / info etc? Can't find anything online...

  • The left and right legs are marksed R and L. The different feet depend on your setup/front or back eyelets or mounting to axle.

    It's really pretty easy.

Post a pic of your fork and the bits and I'll tell you what to use if really necessary.

  • I am always confused with the L and R - is it with you facing it or from your POV... but I think I got it right now...

Not pic of my fork but it's the same bike...

Thank you... I am not very good with putting things together...

  • A closer look at the drops, I am guessing it's the pair with the bigger holes as I will have to mount it to the axle?

    POV

  • So had to take my Pelago rack back to the shop to fit it on... it would seem that none of the bits that come with it would work with my Cinelli Mash Work as it has a straight fork with fancy lugs (that what you call them?) on the ends...

Cycle PS is working on a solution! :-) Will report back, but just in case anyone has the same combo and is scratching their head...

  • Had issues fitting mine too. I basically put the bits on at an angle like so

  • We tried, didn't work... :-( The boys are going to get some other mounts in to see if we could get it to work...

  • i just used a couple washers between fork and rack mounts

  • The bosses on the fork legs are for mudguards only. Evans/Pinnacle advice against using them for racks. They also strip rather easily, I've heard...

  • Thanks for replying. I suspected this might be the case. Cheers.

  • We ended up doing this with the pelago rack... not far off from @haveo's set up, but it does mean the bit that attaches the fork to the rack had to be bent to allow to rack to stay level... I am happy. :-)

  • This worth a shot?

Bungee cords are great for small load... just thinking days when I need to take half my flat with me...

  • Does look nice, but quite a bit of dorrah compared to the various fishing bag options that I've seen employed. These do sometimes need some Velcro sewing on to get them mounted up. Something like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Wychwood-NEW-Solace-Carryall-Holdall-Carp-Barbel-Pike-Bait-Method-Fishing-Bag-/262169294754?var=&hash=item3d0a81f7a2:m:m2v0gTkkkwDwp0Gt4_-walw

  • Right...not sure why everyone has gone for the Pelago racks. THAT'S the quality? I was expecting Surly quality for that price....

  • True that, which is why I having been... deciding... forever... now...

  • How much thread is the wheel nut engaging with? Considering the chunky integrated washer.

Not sure I'd trust the (lower) mount like that either. Too much weight might put too much pressure on that little bracket thing (mechanical advantage and all that, plus the weight is on the end of the bracket and not sitting over the axle). I'd be tempted to get a different fork with rack and/or mudguard eyelets. Shame its not a cup and cone hub or you could just get a longer axle and mount the rack after the wheel nuts (with more holding it on - or spacers to bring it out from the fork)

  • One of the minoura problem solvers would do it, or make something similar. I wouldn't have faith in that setup either.

  • I guess time will tell. With regards to the nuts, it pretty much all the way in minus the thickness of the plates, which isn't that thick anyway; there is no real difference to haveo's or others using the same rack with this set of plates, just a different angle. I am aware of the possible problem with the rack essentially pointing forward and it will affect the weight distribution etc etc.

Pelago's initally suggestion was to use thick washers to bypass the lugs on the end of my fork to allow their fittings to stay upright, that would mean even less of the nuts being threaded in, surely hence even less safe? Even they said do so as your own risk... which is why cycle ps came up with this way...

I am having some new wheels built, hopefully before this year is out, so I could review the situation then...

  • I don't see why a bit of light bending can't shape those to fit round the luga

  • I don't know, if you go back a few messages, you'd know I didn't even know how to put the rack together to begin with, so I just went back to the shop and they gave me back this setup...

  • What are the lightest forks with front lowrider mounts?
