• I have an unused Bronx branded tyre which says 'inflate to 45psi' on it. I'm considering giving it a go at higher pressures (I usually ride with tyres at around 100psi), is it too risky?

  • Pressures written on the side of tyres take no account of the weight they'll be carrying, nor other factors that would affect what pressure you want to run.

But 45psi is so low (especially for such a narrow tyre) that I'd be concerned that they're not proper road tyres.

I found these on eBay and the ad states "INFLATES TO 65 P.S.I (4.18 BAR)".

Mind you, it also states that Bronx is "ONE OF THE LEADING BRANDS IN TYRES"...

Looking at the photos, it's not clear that the tyre has a bead to secure it into the hook on a modern clincher rim: early clinchers were "hookless" and consequently could only run tyres at low pressures (as there was nothing to stop them blowing off).

Confusingly, it seems that "hookless" is now a thing again with carbon, tubeless rims. Although I doubt what you have were made with this in mind: they're just shit.

  • I would inflate that tyre to the bin.

  • I'm not sure what this tyre is designed for either, it's not a slick tyre, it has pronounced tread. I'm guessing cyclocross type riders ride at higher pressure than 45? I'm inclined to agree with the bin comment but I've gone ahead and fitted it anyway. It was reasonably tight when getting it on the rim and it seems happy at 100 psi and is still happy after an hour of road riding.

  • Having had an over inflated bmx tyre blow off the rim while cornering, I would only recommend over inflation if you want to train the fast twitch muscles in your sphincter.

  • What Ma3k said.

That's the worst looking tyre I've ever seen. Get rid.

  • what could go wrong?

  • A lot of 27" tyres are 65psi and these look like them, just in 700c flavour.

They also look a bit cheap but if it's just rolling around at low speed they would be ok I'm sure. The rubber is just molded on at the end of the day, the structure of the tyre is in the mesh and tyre bead.

Cut it up and have a look.

    Then buy some better tyres.
