Klein attitude 90's bike

Posted on
  • Hi guys. Need some help. Cousin of mine wants to sell a bike he's had for many years. Condition still looks great. I have no idea what it should sell for, but eBay are showing prices close to £500.00 plus. Frame size to be confirmed, but it's a KLEIN ATTITUDE in red. I know it's American and I don't want him getting ripped off and selling it for £20.00! Can anyone help with pricing and also if anyone wants to buy it then let me know? don't have too much experience with the retro stuff. Thanks

  • An adult bike. will find out the frame size soon.

  • That looks like a 1998/1999 version, I would guess a small, and pretty much as it would have come from new, standard OEM kit on it, and in top condition. Only the bar ends may have been added.

I sold my 1999 comp (the next model up) for about £500 about a year ago.
It took a few listings on eBay - got a lot of silly offers, one as low as £100 to 'take it off my hands'

There is a Retro bike forum which I suggest you/he looks at (they're very nerdy - only interested in pre 1998 bikes 😳)

Even though it's in great nick, it's more of a collectors item, and I would guess £400 would be about right.

  • Many thanks for the reply mate. Was totally in the dark on this one, but will let him know about the price and the other site. If anyone is interested let me know and you can speak with my cousin directly. Thanks.

  • I had a Klein Klein (the ones the "nerdy" lot want on the retro bike forum) with a few period upgrades and it sold for £400. This was one of the first frames that were effectively Treks branded as Kleins. Not made in the USA unlike the pre Trek models. Still a nice bike and in good condition for it's age. But tell your cousin not to hand in his/her notice just in case they thought this might make them rich. The "proper" Kleins had stunning fade paint jobs, had coke can thin oversized main tubes with internal cable routing. GLWS.

  • This was mine (with a lot of new components on it, before I put it back to OE)
1998 version, last one to be built in US at the Chehalis factory.
The paint job was the best part about the frame - all paint, no transfers.
The earlier ones had mad paint fades in neon colours.

  • Think the highest yielding Klein is the dolomite decor with matching stem a forks, regularly 5k dorrah

  • Adrian will be able to give chapter and verse, but as has been said, this is a Trek era bike so won't be shown much love by collectors, your best bet is to hope that someone who really wanted the bike in the late 90's spots it on eBay and has to have it.

  • This is one I was thinking of buying, but it's very blown out: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8131181@N05/albums/72157661655545213

  • This is a Trek era Klein I had that was a little too large: https://www.flickr.com/photos/8131181@N05/albums/72157629488268210

  • Anyway-you get the idea, paint is a strong point, generally.

  • That's the type that brings high yields for sure, I saw one in an unusual decor for about 200 other day, like op's model, tried a cheeky 75 offer as no bids, but no luck

  • Most of the value is in the frame - I can't see a vintage bike enthusiast wanting to ride something with entry-level drivetrain and a Jett fork, and on the other hand someone just looking for a bike to ride will want something newer.

As such I'd suggest the value is about £250-300 with £150-200 of that coming from the frame and the rest being for everything else.

  • wow amazing responses from everyone, but i love the moonrise colour! how freaking cool is that paint scheme. wish they would do that with road bikes! Many thanks all! will get him to take a look at the responses.

  • Funny you should say that

  • Yeah looks amazing. Would love to do a custom job on a bike of mine with something similar.

  • cousin is very grateful for the wonderful advice and says a big thanks to you all!
