As far as I know, lenses vary massively in their repaiability, usually for the worse if there's a lot of plastic.
The fact someone has offered you money for it suggests they need some of it for a repair so it's probably possible.
It's probably more a case of it not being worth a London repair place's time more than anything, or they'd just rather spend time/resources fixing £10,000 zooms...
I'd be shocked if they were flogging write-offs on eBay - it's really not worth the scandal, especially with the money they make anyway.
