Depends on the lens.
As far as I know, lenses vary massively in their repaiability, usually for the worse if there's a lot of plastic. The fact someone has offered you money for it suggests they need some of it for a repair so it's probably possible.
It's probably more a case of it not being worth a London repair place's time more than anything, or they'd just rather spend time/resources fixing £10,000 zooms...
I'd be shocked if they were flogging write-offs on eBay - it's really not worth the scandal, especially with the money they make anyway.
question. is it the case that specialist shops will look upon anyone they consider to be clueless as fair game for a stripe up?
i took an impact damaged lense to a respected camera repair company in london and was told that because of the damage the cost of repair would be greater than its value.
"we can post it back to you for £10.00 or we can dispose of it for you" read the email.
i decided to collect it and as i was leaving i mentioned to the gentleman that was seeing me out that i was suprised it couldnt be repaired. he asked which model it was and another feeler technical question i didnt know the answer to so i just showed him the lense. he quickly looked it over through the plastic packaging and replied,
"yeah they have bought out a new one since this one, if its damaged, you may as well throw it in the bin"
so i go home take a picture of it put it on a famous auction website and somebody has just offered over £250 for it.
i wonder how often they get away with little scams like that?
is it too harsh to think of it as a scam?
could it have been a genuine mistake on their part? twice?
their name has been mentioned a few times in this thread with all good said about them but this is a bit wrong i think.
