What is your access like?
This is a good question.
Now you have retired from the filth you should do the landscaping, loads of em do.

I wasn't being funny. Filth make good gardeners.

Looks delicious! Good crop there.

They aren't retired. Just looking for the bodies.

I can attest that it was indeed delicious

Anyone know where I could get a small/medium amount of cheap sand for repotting house plants?
-
• #1358
Local park sandpit after dark.

Or golf course

Think Travis Perkins or Wickes do smallish bags, I remember Simon getting one to lay a couple of paving slabs on in front of our shed.

@Ramsaye - good I dislike golfers
@Kat_Balou - Slightly more helpful, thank you :)I pulled the trigger on the Ikea Vaxer stuff for my windowless kitchen. Probably should have got the smaller size as it only just fits on my fridge, but yeah, I like it. Also I bought a Ficus Benjamina which I've chopped into three bits (one third in pic) and hopefully will do a Bonsai with once it's had a chance to settle

Does anyone know about hedgehogs?
While I've been away for a bit one has snuggled itself up against my motorbike tyre and is using the cover as a duvet. I woke it/disturbed it in the day time and its still there now napping.
I'm alright with taking public transport tomorrow if he's still there, but it's obviously not a long term solution.
- Should I just build him a house? If I do, how do I make him relocate?
- how do you make sure a hedgehog house isn't occupied by rats?
- Websites seem to talk a lot about ill or injured hedgehogs - how do you know if they're ill?

Yes. Very easy to do, just use something like a wine crate. There's plenty of websites offering tips on how to build one. Give it hedgehog 'kerb appeal' and it'll move in, so fill it with small, dead leaves, put it in a quiet part of the garden, out the wind.

Cheers.
Re location - I've got a concrete side path / entrance to the garden from the front of the house, and that's where he is.
There are quite a few sensible places in the garden I could put it. Is he likely to go and find it?

if it has kids dibs on a hoglet

I don't know much about hedgehogs but I know they move around a lot when they're not hibernating (and it's far too early for that). So if it doesn't move soon it might be injured but definitely make a house for it.
I haven't read all this but should give you the answers you need I think:
http://www.sttiggywinkles.org.uk/top-navigation/wildlife-advice/hedgehog-fact-sheet.htmlI'm envious - we have a terrible slug problem and hedgehogs love slugs.

Sadly Spike has moved on.
Still going to build a house for him. I've got a spare palette crate I was thinking of using for parts.
The only thing I'm unsure of is whether to put it on the SW side of the garden as it's higher and dryer than the N and NE and people seem to recommend moist areas.

Build it so that you can lift the lid when it is properly hibernating time to see if it is actually being used. November 5th is around the time for hibernating hence many get cooked in bonfires by accident. So you have a month to get it investigated and made. There's loads of info online.

Lots of tomatos in my greenhouse. But only a few are turning red, most are still very very green.
Running out of time I guess ? I've tried ripening a few on a windowsill but 9 days on they are still as green as ever.

^ same here. Not enough for green tomato chutney. Was thinking fried green tomatoes. Does that work with the little ones?
-
• #1371
Ive got a greenhouse heater and guess I might have to crack it out in a few weeks !
-
• #1372
Stick them in a brown paper bag with some bananas. The gas the bananas emit ripens them.
-
• #1373
I've put a few bananas in the greenhouse to no avail. I've got 50 odd tomatos to ripen I'd need a skip to ripen them all off the vine !!
-
• #1374
Need to pick them and put them in a small confined space with the bananas
-
• #1375
We have this, so we pick the tomatoes and put them in the fruit bowl with/on bananas. As user58258 says, its the gas that bananas emit that cause all fruit to ripen (ethene if I remember correctly). So you need it to surround the tomatoes to get them to ripen
Arse. Dust sheets and scaffold boards then. Good luck.
