I have one, they're good. Has automatic settings but you can easily switch it to manual as you learn how things work.
It obviously depends on the lens you go for, the common thing is to get the 35mm f1.8 prime for about £150. There are so many megapixels that you can easily crop to make up for the lack of zoom (or just walk nearer/further away).
With a zoom lens you can handhold at 300mm and still get solid pictures.
If you can get one cheap then go for it, the D3300 and D5300 do have some improvements but nothing huge if you're getting a good price.
