I've lived in haggerston, bow And now Leytonstone which is a well worn migration pattern for someone arriving in London in their early 20s . There are few places I wouldn't live in East London, some are better than others , but most are perfectly safe and pleasant places to live, assuming you employ a bit of common sense.
Visit an area at all times of the day and night if possible though. Haggerston was great and very central but lots of drug dealer activity and antisocial behaviour in specific pockets which ideally should be avoided if possible and with due diligence.
