  • To be more expansive, speaker wire is generally only a problem for people with weird amps like certain vintage of Naim audio.
Something to do with not having an inductance network in the output stage.
Or alternatively, something to do with making you buy their expensive wire.
    Take your pick. :-)

  • Yeah, know what you mean. Simply a case of how much you believe in the justifications for spending serious cash on wire.

  • Beoplay a1 an absolute blast

  • If someone could help... I have no idea of what I'm doing...
I had for years a pre amp / power amp combo, QED C300 and P300.
All good, a little hmm noise, was always there, I got used to it, but apart from that it drives my speakers nicely (for my un-demanding standards)
When I got the combo, internet searches at the time lead me to believe that if I could find another power amp (the P300) I could use them as mono blocks. So for years I had an eBay alert for one. They came now and then but always for too much money. I got luckier last Sunday and got one for £63...
But I can't find anymore on the internets trace of the double block story, don't know if it's even true, and have not clue how to plug the whole thing... Any help resolving this would be much appreciated!
On pictures, what I've done, seems to work... Don't even know what input to choose, 200mV or 640mV (had it on 200 previously so kept it like that)

  • are both speaker sets in the right hand side?

  • On right hand side channel of each power amp, yes, but I didn't think it would matter?

    ... like this

  • Ideally you would want to bridge the power amps to mono.

The way it is configured in the photos appears that you are only using one channel of each stereo power amp, so advantage of having two amps is reduced. More headroom on the power supplies, I guess.

  • Ideally you would want to bridge the power amps to mono.

Can this be done without opening the box?

Any indication looking at the back of of the power amps that they could be used as mono amp, should they be intended for this as I thought they were?

  • Oh yes!
I found owner's manual scan on my hard drive! No idea where I got it from at the time, glad I looked... I must have been looking into this more seriously than I thought back then!
    Will report!

  • Armed with instructions for the QED P300, I now have confirmation that the system can be used for dual mono bi-amplification. A switch in the inside of the power amps has to be changed, resulting in "the left and right input are now shorted together and the P300 is ready for use in a dual mono bi-amp mode"

    Then I get lost...
"For bi-amplification, connect the treble input of the right loudspeaker the the right channel speaker of the P300. Then connect the bass input of the right hand loudspeaker to the left channel output of the P300. Repeat the above for the left channel P300, this time using the left channel pre-out socket of the C300."

    What?
To start with, and I googled it, what do they mean by treble and bass input of the loudspeaker, to me the + and- signs had nothing to do with this... Nothing suggesting these are the same things" the internet...

Can someone provide clarity please, I don't want to burn my speakers...

  • Bi amping requires speakers with a cross over opened up to receive separate inputs for the bass and treble drivers.

In your circumstances; either just run one channel from each amp to each speaker, or you could consider running both positive connections and both negative connections from the power amps into the appropriate connection on the each speaker, probably necessitating terminating two wires into a single banana plug at the speaker end.

Bear in mind that I'm not an electrician.

  • Thanks, I think I gather your two wire into a single banana, but what scares me is that there is no mention to this in the manual.

Is dual mono bi-amped configuration different from bi amplification or are these two denominations describing the same thing?
All I wanted to do (because I heard it was better) was to amplify each speaker separately, not treble and bass separately.

The diagram confuses me... At the output of the power amp, it shows left and right, where in my tiny understanding of all this it should say + and - as per the connection on speakers.

  • to get the most out of the set-up, possessing speakers that have treble and bass separate connections is desirable

  • So on a stereo amp you have l+, l-, r+, r-.

To connect a speaker you just need a + and a -. Options are to either just choose a + and a - and wire up your speaker, or to wire both + to your speaker +, and both - to your speaker -.

It's likely that either option will achieve the same or similar result. If you just have one cable for each speaker, try selecting, for example, r+ and l- to the + and - on your speaker and see how that sounds.

Amp 1 (left channel): r+ to + on left speaker, l- to - on left speaker.

Amp 2 (right channel): r+ to + on right speaker, l- to - on right speaker.

I reckon that will work ok.

  • Monoblocs work fine with speakers with just one set of inputs.

I have some meridian mono amps into Spendor speakers and it's all good.

In @veLLo 's situation, he just has too many output sockets on the back of his amp cos it was intended primarily for stereo use.

  • I had a pair of bbc Rogers gold monitors dangled in front of me today.
Well that's what she claimed they were.

  • Best come on ever...

  • 'she'... I know who that is ...

  • I reckon that will work ok.

Seems to work indeed, thanks so much for taking the time explaining...

According to manual, it was intended for both, the internal switch letting you, supposedly, choose between stereo and mono block. Shame they didn't bother clarifying how to plug the speakers, what kind of speakers (normal or with treble and bass separate connection - I didn't even know these existed)...

PS. @Chasnotrobert , do you have a Roberts?

  • Glad you've got it working - hopefully delivering good sounds for you.

I've not got a Roberts, sadly; maybe one day. Always handy to have a few ideas for the n+1 biek.

  • With a fact sheet like this, would the 70w output refer to the individual speaker or the pair? Cheers

  • You'll be pleased to know I lost my IE800s again, but for real this time, with a 5.5g iPod, as part of a very long clusterfuck of a journey to Turkey.

  • Is anyone interested in owning a piece of rock n roll history? I am selling my turntable.

Rega P2, RB250 arm with a new AT95e cart, an Isokinetic belt (new) and a glass platter.

This is the actual turntable KISS recorded Dynasty on.
