Go in July or August when the temperature reaches 10 degrees or above
-
• #26954
Avoid July! Late april, early may is best. Maybe August. It's a bit of luck really but if you get it right... it is incredible.

Yeah, that's why I've never been. Always want to head to warmer climates.
Wouldn't mind going in the rain. Places are more beautiful in the rain. -

I'm not a fan of Rapha, but I only have 2 merino wool tops (The Paul smith ones) with which to base my opinion upon so to make it fair I purchased the Cross skinsuit from last year... on inspection:
- The shoulder 'padding' is a 2 cent piece of fabric liner, it's useless and I'll probably sew in another
- The oversize, single pocket is reinforced at the back with the same liner, only the circles are massively out of alignment, I suspect they'll rip so I will have them unpicked and re-sewn to where they should be.
- The fit is okay (at best) but the arms are loose at the cuff grippers. I have thin arms, but no more so than any other cyclist. I will have to get them tailored in too.
Considering I was hoping to use this in winter crit races too I'm not sure. But I'm going to bear with and use it as the basis for my hatred for years to come.

I wear a medium in everything. All the fits are for the same sized human just slimmer or looser depending on style.

• #26966
Only cunts need shoulder padding. Man up like everyone else has been doing for the last hundred years.

• #26967
why bother putting one in at all then?

• #26968
merino base layer is looser than merino mesh?
would assume as it doesnt have the polyester to stiffen it up?
-
• #26969
would love to...
but for example the hardshell in normal size is perfect -

Anyone on here got the PT soft shell gloves? If so, is the seam on the thumb as uncomfortable as all the reviews make out?
-
• #26972
Fuck knows.
-
• #26973
That seam is very prominent when new but after a few wears & a couple of drownings it softens & disappears .... at least mine did anyway. Beautiful light windproof glove, but not waterproof by any stretch of the imagination.

I have them, but haven't ridden them yet. I can tell you that they're a weird sizing/fit for me.
The fingers are the right length, but pretty loose and baggy, the palm seems to be about right, and the gloves seem to be about the right length up to the wrist, but only trying them off the bike, the padded area of the palm is an unusual size/position. It's way to big to be supposed to just sit in the 'fold' across the palm, but too short to come down and provide padding for the heel of the palm which is what it feels like it should be doing. They make me feel like I just need to pull them on a bit more, sort of hitch them up an inch to get the padding in the right place.

From memory the thumb does slightly dig in, but not as noticeable as the merino gloves.
Bear in mind i probably don't do 3-4 hour rides in winter or when its that cold so it could become more of an issue of you do those sorts of rides.
I've also got Assos S_7 winter gloves and the PT gloves fit better, nicer feel using the bars/ shifters etc.
Well, can't have it all!
