Genesis Flyer SS winter trainer

  • I have been looking for a Flyer for a while and @Phyllis obliged by selling me a 60cm 2016 F&F for a very reasonable price.

It arrived at BC today and I dropped a few bits on it to get it going.

The idea is that I use up all of the bits from my ill fated Ti Bontrager build. The other idea is that I use this for all winter clubruns to attempt to get some form for next year, after this year was a total write off.

Need to mess about a bit more with it, sort chain line on double cranks etc.

    Oh and find some wheels.....

  • Just went and popped the Bontrager seat post and saddle on it, then the sweet Bontrager brakes.

Then added a set of wheels to see the drop.........and they are miles off.

Bugger, shimano long drops it is then, I've got a rear out of the bits box, but I may have to file down a Sora caliper for the front.

Sorted some decent second hand mudgaurds and also getting some gratis gutted Campag ergos.

So coming together, er, sort of nicely.

  • Those cranks look so nice

  • Nothing like a good fixed winter trainer. Get some flaps on there.

  • Going to go flip flop so can run SS primarily but Fixed for mid week hills.

Will be getting a couple of the club/shop topflaps jobs for it I reckon

@fujiracer they are lovely, just hope I can get a semi decent chain line on them. If not I have some really old DA cranks that can go on.

  • I look forward to some fixed BCC Club Runs!

  • Right

Picked up some lovely Harry Roland wheels from @Brain-Stew (lovely chap, btw) gave them a good clean and popped them on, added a halo click Steele too.

As its now got to the point where I need to get this finished, I've booked it in to the shop so @hillbilly can finish it off (and rectify all my errors)

This will also have the added bonus for the shop of me not constantly asking daft questions and generally getting in the way while I'm there...

    Still to go on

    • striped out centaur levers
    • long drop callipers
    • chain ring/rear cog/chain
    • bar tape
    • guards and huge flaps
    • a different seat collar

Hopefully add some of this myself before Jim gets his ginger paws on it.

  • I found out the hard way that fixed during a club run is a terrible idea!

  • I got one of these a couple of days ago. It's weeeelllll nice to ride. Quite long in the tt though for the size, I found. Also found it soooo slack with the stock set back post. Really needs inline. But yours isn't stock so it doesn't matter :-)

  • Commence gear ratio chat

  • Also I think I've seen you around "New Bermondsey" a couple of times recently. I recognised the train bike after you'd passed me going the other way :)

  • Correct. Came as stock with 42/17. Muchos spin. Probably 14 gear inches too few. Nice to be riding fixed again though. Forgot how much funner it is than freewheeling everywhere.

  • 65" (42/17) is pretty good for anywhere that isn't flat, in my experience. Also fine around town for me, but I'm happy to ride at that speed. Wait until it's cold and windy...

  • And really you shouldn't do it in a group of inexperienced road riders (imo), but that's argument/informed discussion in canopy for another day :)

    Fixed clubruns will
Happen, I has the routes 👍🏼

  • Yeah TT is looooong, that's one of the reasons I fancied one TBH, means I can get closer to the position of the Rourke rather than the more upright TrainBiek.

Will need to tweak the set up I'm sure, but early tape measure work seems to show its bang on

  • Indeed youb will have, until recently I lived around there, but I go through several times a day for work as all my sites are on or near Q1

    What you on?

  • 70.8 (42/16)is what I'm going to start with on SS and fixed

Will be a welcome relief from running 92.6 on track

Will drop it to closer to 65 to do fixed hill reps

This winter is going to be horrid.....

  • So @hillbilly got her rolling and I'be ridden it a whole 2miles home.

First impressions are excellent, 70 is decent gear for everything, bike is relatively light and seems a decent ride and is responsive pelting through traffic.

The chainline matching up perfectly on the Bontrager cranks was a big win in terms of parts bin success.

    Things to do

    • Add DC6 sticker for 6 extra watts
    • Sort out awful plastic rear mudgaurd holder.
    • Gut left hand ergo
    • Pester Jim for that 3/32 16t cog for the other side of the Hub
    • fit all the cadence magnets et al
    • Get some huge BC flaps on it
    • Dig out SPD SLs
    • Ride it, a lot, up hills

  • So I have put 250 miles on this now and its a cracking F&F for the price I must say. Its maybe a touch skittish at the front when cornering, but that may just be me not being completely tuned into it yet. I certainly notice a marked difference in handling and responsiveness when I get on this after riding the Train all day!!

I ran it in commuting while the Train was in the shop and did a small work run through Cambridgeshire on it, where it was very well mannered.

I've also done half a Chaingang session on it, where as expected, the gear is 'too low' for my grinding and I top out about 26mph, however its great legspeed work and is perfect when I'm schooling the noobs so I'll just leave it and after Christmas, when I want to get some speed on I suppose the Train will have to come out.

I did South Hills on it last night and its much better suited, with the gear being slightly too high on roads like Benson, Fox and the back of Canonbie. Its just like overgeared efforts and should sort me right out if I carry on through the winter.

To do list still stands at

    • Gut left hand ergo and work out how to stop the hoods slipping when climbing.
    • Pester Jim for that 3/32 16t cog for the other side of the Hub
    • Get some huge BC flaps on it
  • Niiiice. Put some 28s on mine last night and rode a 200k on it today. Was great. 28c tyres have totally changed the bike. V happy. Yeah - yours needs flaps.

  • I'be got 28 4seasobs on this and they are spot on.

Brixton Flaps next on shopping list 😬
