  • torque wrench for bikez?

    Answer:

    Is this still true?

  • cheap torque wrench for bikez?

  • Best cup and cone 1 1/8 threadless headset?

  • Best

Best by what measure? Best avoided, in all probability, since there are plenty of decent cartridge bearing headsets. While loose balls are the best design, they're also uncommon so you end up compromising and making the best the enemy of the good.

  • Rat, was hoping to find something that I can quickly repack with fresh bearing and grease that can be brought from next to nothing as oppose to cartirdge bearing like my 1" threaded headset (admittedly isn't that expensive).

  • Repacking cartridge bearings isnt that much more work.

Do it With my hub bearings all the time. The local climate hates my bike.

  • on the subject of 1" threaded headsets

is there a tester approved choice ?

The fleet includes Tange Levin Alloy and Campag C Record, neither of which has been touched since installation in 1985 and 1991 respectively. Both are still available (-ish, the Record design has changed slightly in the intervening decades) for about £40. For less money, the steel Levin would be a good choice. Cane Creek 110 and Shimano DuraAce are both good, but don't do enough to justify being as expensive as they are.

  • Tester approved chainring bolt spacers/shims? I need to bring my outer mtb chainring 2mm inboard to compensate for the silly 2mm of meat on a FCM970 inner chainring that I didn't realise was specific to 970 XTR only.

  • I think Campag might still manufacture a 1 1/8" external threadless headset. My Record Hiddenset is trouble free after plenty of years abuse

  • Tester approved chainring bolt spacers/shims?

Whichever ones your preferred shop has in stock

  • I have found an FSA one with a massive bearing on the bottom and normal size one on top, that's perfect as it's more durable to impact and easy to service.

Felt real nice once it pack with grease.

  • Pig?

  • Pig?

There's also the Hammer/Mallet/Chisel with balls both ends.

  • Not specifically a TSTR approves question, but I figured you were good at technical drawings and stuff :-)

I have a zipp 900 clincher disc like this one (http://www.zipp.com/wheels/900-clincher/) with the red free hub body, and I would like a track axle conversion kit, however I'm slightly confused about compatibility.

I'm pretty sure that this ( http://www.zipp.com/accessories/detail.php?ID=126 ) is the correct/best track axle, however I cannot find any shops that stock it or have one available to ship to the UK.

However, some dude on TTF has a second hand conversion kit for sale, but it is for an older hub design and I'm not sure if it's compatible. I believe that the conversion kit on TTF is the '04 track axle kit and designed to work with the silver free hub.

This page describes the timeline of Zipp discs ( http://www.zipp.com/support/identify/discs.php ). It says that the '06 track axle kit is not backwards compatible, but do you think that the '04 kit is forwards compatible? The various track axles (from 04, 06, and 07) all look very similar and in 06, they say the changes were only made to save weight.

These are the assembly diagrams for the two kits:

    http://www.zipp.com/_media/productdocs/2004_track_hub_assembly.pdf
    http://www.zipp.com/_media/productdocs/2006_track_hub_assembly.pdf

Do you think the 04 kit will work with my disc?

  • Never mind...

    Reply from Zipp customer service:

We no longer produce the disc conversion kit for the 182 hub. In regards as to whether or not an older conversion kit will work, it should not as the bearing size was different on the disc hubs that had the silver freehub.

  • bearing size was different

That was what I felt needed checking

  • Shame because I can't find the '06 track axle anywhere.

If I can't find one soon I may stick to gears...

  • Recommended bottom bracket for use with GXP cranks, around the same price point as the SRAM one?

I remember there's a lot of cross-compatibility with Shimano etc., and that the SRAM ones don't have a great reputation.

  • Recommended bottom bracket for use with GXP cranks, around the same price point as the SRAM one?

SRAM. They're now better than the first ones which got a bad name for reliability.

I remember imagine there's a lot of cross-compatibility with Shimano

ftfy. You can't truly remember something which was never true.

  • I thought you could use Hollowtech BBs with GXP?

What I must be thinking of is the On-One outboard bearing track chainset, which came with a rubbish BB but was compatible with Hollowtech.

  • I thought you could use Hollowtech BBs with GXP?

There are adapter bushings which convert some 24mm NDS bearings to the 22mm required for GXP, but they're a bit pointless when native GXP BBs are easy to find.

  • Thoughts on this, for UT cranks in BBright?

These seem to be the only thread together "cup" for it, and they generally seem to be the way to go for Hollowtech and GXP

  • UT cranks in BBright?

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/campagnolo-ultra-torque-bb-right-bottom-bracket-cups/

Threaded-together is just press fit plus carrying the fitting tool around with you forever :)

  • You give no weight to the claims off better alignment between cups = less creaking?
