Could it be the profile of the tyre, Bridgestone Bt45? They've been on the bike since I've had it. I've scraped foot pegs but the bit at the edge remains untouched, that's why I was asking. (I'm not trying to scrape knees btw just ride in jeans and boots) but I think I counter steer quite a bit not sure how that affects it.

Just a quick note on "counter-steer". Counter steering is the only way any bike steers (including pushbikes) over about 12mph. The only difference between instinctive turning and 'counter-steering' is the mental awareness that you are doing it.
