  • Anyone know the rules for driving in a Cycle Super Highway? I was cycling home along the Chelsea Embankment after 11pm last night when I could hear what sounded like a taxi really close to me. Turned round and he was tailgating me. He waited for the car on my right to over take then overtook me and moved back into the CSH and carried on driving.

It was 11pm free flowing traffic yet he was driving up the inside of the others. Is using the CSH in this way legal?

  • Doesn't sound like it.

If it's got a solid white line on the outside then cars shouldn't be driving along in it.

If it's dashed outer line then it's ok to cross it at that point (think turning into side roads). Although some times you need to cross it where there is no dashed line (such as the coach parking bays opposite Millbank Tower).

If there's no line then they can drive in it, this is usually where the cycle superhighway shares the left hand lane with cars coming up to a left turn (the lane is normally left turn only for cars). The approach to the junction of Claverton St on Grosvenor Road is an example of this.
