Love that

I need new mudguards: do the sizes actually come out accurate? I'd like to whack something big in so I can go equally big on tyres. But not sure what I can fit.
What's a good metal guard? And a good commuter/exploring tyre? Polished aluminium and tan walls would be good, at the risk of being cliched.

Gilles Berthoud, cheap, strong and light (compared to SKS).

+1 for the Berthouds. They're bastards to fit but once you're past that you'll love them.

Off topic but how did you rate the tyres on the Smithfield? Mrs TM is starting commuting a long distance on them and trying to work out if worthwhile upgrading them to tour plus or marathon as she can't fix a puncture, and hub gear even if I teach her.

Good commuting/exploring tire is Clement X’PLOR USH or the MSO variant. If commuting and exploring road only the the Grand Bois tires are reaally good. The grand Bois tires have tan sidewalls.

They came back saying UK addresses only... Brexit wall of ice apparently coming along ahead of schedule :-(

Ditching the car for a while so ratbike needs to be more functional without dropping $$$ to make it so.
Dug out the old rear rack and some bungees, easily added extra 5kg+ capacity.
Drivetrian very tired looking.
Edit: pic hadn't uploaded!

Good. Wore quickly though. Now have Schwalbe Marathons which are robust but... meh.

So Berthoud guards and Grand Bois tyres? With the mudguards are the widths accurate? So, for example, if I measure between the inside of my fork legs and I have a 55mm gap, I can fit 55mm guards? And what tyres can I then fit in a XXmm guard? XX-10mm or something?

Grand Bois tyres

Marathon Supreme is plenty, grand bois is for bearded hipsters. The biggest you can get is 42mm though.
Or if you can fit these: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=143274;menu=1000,2,103,212

I was looking at the GB extra light tires in 32mm - are they not worth bothering with? Found a lot of reviews online of people who rate 'em

Compass/GB tyres are excellent, don't let Amey's Schwalbe obsession put you off

Thanks.
Are they still making the Cyprès “Extra Léger” model?

Doesn't look like it, though there's the Compass Stampede Pass in standard and extra light
Thanks for the tip! Listing says UK shipping only but I've written to ask them anyway.
