  • No idea, it was the first time I've ever been too. It was 30°C every day, with one quite heavy shower, I imagine that temp being lower and chance of rain higher by October

  • B.D.C.A 100 cancelled at Etwall due to heavy rain! So instead of trying to do a 3:50, or faster! I did 38 miles really easy with my other half and the Hounslow & District WLRS club-run to Arborfield, 73 miles 17.5 av speed, a nice easy "potter" weekend.

  • Should be OK - just be aware that the conditions can change very quickly so might be worth bringing a gabba and some full gloves in a saddle bag. Aim to start early at first light and finish well before dusk.

  • Aim to start early at first light

Depends how high you are, but it can be bitterly cold at first light in October, even in the south of France.

  • Yeah true. @Amey err towards climbing when it's cold, descending when it's warm, don't get caught out descending in the cold and fading light whilst tired.

  • It can be bitterly cold in July.

    Fuck you, altitude!

  • Barrister. And you don't really...

Still, the last few days have been good:

    Saturday: Splugenpass
Sunday: Mortirolo (twice, from different directions)
    Today: Umbrail and Stelvio
    Tomorrow: Ghisallo
    Day after: Zoncolan

The rest of the week's looking pretty good too. Selle Ronda, Jaufenpass...

  • It was 2 degrees C at the top of the Passo Umbrail this morning and 6degC at the top of Stelvio this afternoon. Bogging freezing, even with a Gabba.

  • 'over the bars three times' is apparently a good day out.

I only went over the bars once today so my day doesn't measure up.

Glad everyone had a good time. For me the Masts is better than BPW, Afan, Cwmcarn, and all that shit; I'm happy that all you Englishers can see the glory of our off piste, taking the piss antics and join in accordingly.

  • It warmed up as you climbed? Or did you reach the top of the Umbrail quite early?

I assume you did the Splugen from the south? If so, im envious, only ever descended that side.

  • Yep, it warmed up. The fact it stopped raining helped the temperatures, I suspect.

Did the Splugenpass from the North, from Splugen, went over the top down to the lake, had a coffee, went back. It was just a little spin to break up the journey from Basel to Bormio.

  • Totes. Have I mentioned it was raining too?

  • Did you get a soggy bot bot?

  • For me the Masts is better than BPW, Afan, Cwmcarn, and all that shit; I'm happy that all you Englishers can see the glory of our off piste, taking the piss antics and join in accordingly.

It looked great! I just need to man up and get the skills to ride it properly. Apologies for being so shit :/

  • The Masts is not an easy place to ride, no need to apologise. Come down to the Swansea hills sometime, trails here are a good buildup for the Masts.

  • Not really. Castelli Nanoflex 3/4s FTW.

  • Hey giofox, I did it, remember you were advising on a London to Brighton route a while back? Well I let my Garmin guide me, kerrikey I must've upset it in the past... so many Hill's.
Yesterday I did this....no... not draw a line on a map in red ink... thats my little Garmin plot of where I rode yesterday. Dirtfud to Briteon.

It's the hilliest ride I've ever done in my life so far...proper cyclerists may scoff (let them! :) ) at my feeble hill climbing abilities but ... phwoooaaarrrrrr, so many pointy bits!

Ditchling beacon dang nearly made me go 'pop'. I stopped to do a selfie, look at the pretty red colour of my face!

I was even cheating and didn't do it on the Pffffixey, I was on my skip-saved single speeder home-built special with new fangled 'freehub' thingum. Celebrated not dying en-route with a couple of pints in my fave pub down there and 2 plates of Veggie Curry at eat-as-much-as-you-can Veggie Indian Buffet. Came home on the train.

Got 2 'PBs' (Personal Bests) yesterday. 1176M climbed and fastest I've ever been on bike... 43.3MPH, it was downhill, I beleive I fell off the edge of the Surrey Alps.

  • chapeau fomoaf :)

  • Well done indeed!

Are you saying you let the Garmin pick the route?

  • Thanks one and all. I was chuffed, thats one I've had on my t'do list for ages but always been a bit Chicken.

Yeah gio, I let Mr Garmin plot it, it seemed to go very 'around the houses' I must say. I'm going to attempt to do Dirtfud to London to Brighton next using that route you linked to that went out West then down country a bit. It seems a lot less killer than the witches hat ride I did yesterday. Ta for the gentle prompt BTW.

I did Dartford to Herne Bay last week Fixed, I don't think I posted that one up yet. It's great having time to be able to do this sorta thing, 1st time I've been 'between' jobs in 20 years.

    sorry for lazy link post..

  • Well done, looks like you had a nice day for it too.

  • Wow, how trustful of you to leave it all to the Garmin! ;)

I'm planning on doing this: http://www.aukweb.net/events/detail/16-888/

Unfortunately I have just picked up a second job, so rather than being "in between" jobs I am currently crushed between two jobs. #nofreetime #muchjealous
