Very much this. Also, it'll mean you'll find on Monday you have no bike for the commute as you've snapped a rear derailleur, you were lazy and it's still covered in mud or the the pads are now dangerously worn.

I think it's completely foolproof and will encourage me to keep my bike clean and in good nick.

I can definitely find a bike to do both well.
