it's probably not what you want to hear, but patience is needed. if the problem reoccurs see a physio and get an mri done

Been 2 years since surgery on both knees. After the revalidation periods (yay, one knee at a time) my intestines thought it was a nice idea to go from being annoying to downright evil. Diagnosed with a spastic colon so that's a load of fun but the medication sort of works. After 2 years of not being able to do any sports, I'm finally starting to go to the gym again and I'm cycling more and more but I gained about 30kg so I need to get rid of that. At least I can ride with a light gearring again. On a normal gearring my knees still hurt. I moved a few kilometers further from the pub so instead of cycling 7km, I now have to go 12km (both single trip). So at least that's a good workout. Going to the gym monday, tuesday and wednesday, rest of the week he's closed in the evening (moved to a small village), so yeah. also going to pick up my poi's again in the hope to have a workout from them on the days that the gym is closed.

Pain at top of right knee in the car and next day can't climb stairs or ride for knee tendon pain.
Patella tendonitis is below the knee, on top of knee(cap) sounds like bursitis.
I'm no expert, but has a history of both.

Thanks, I hope it works out for the best. Already see that the weight I can use on the straight leg press is going up. First time at 40kg I already had knee pain, now I can use 60kg. Just need to keep on training.

Extensive exam by physio today culminating in pain free low cadence high power through a taped knee. Diagnosis - asymmetric musculature pulling knee cap out of kilter. Treatment - tape, exercises and IT roller. Can ride low load high cadence.

Had that in the past through running ^. Exercises and stretches work, just keep at it.

Huge amounts of IT band rolling. Worked up to 90mins turbo so allowed myself a gentle race today. Warmed up carefully, last off the line and stuck to higher cadence and below threshold. Completed, not last and no pain so far.

I've recently started training and have noticed a pain in the top/just above my IT band, only in my left knee. It feels like it clicks/pops every pedal rotation. I am a newbie when it comes to this stuff so any help and advice on how to fix/prevent this pain will be much appreciated.
Thanks

Hmmm, any chance you can describe what the pain was and where it was hurting? I've got a problem at the moment on the outside of my kneecap, from top to bottom, and I think it's ligament based as I've had loads of problems with that knee in the past.

Raced on track and road in my mid thirties and never really had any physical issues. Started training and doing Club 10s now in my mid forties and I've got mild pain in the front of both knees when doing / after hard efforts. Knees are fine doing Z1/2 stuff.
Anything I can do to aid recovery from training / TTs ? Only have two TTs left this year, and would like to do them if possible.Getting old(er) sucks.

Just seen this. The one thing I learnt from this is it's very unwise to self diagnose. I was convinced from all my research that I had patella tendonitis. I didn't. £45 for a decent physio exam, tape and exercises to correct. Had I self diagnosed I'd have sacked my season and needlessly lost heaps of fitness.

Good advice, mine's not so bad now, haven't ridden to work for about a month now but got out on the bike Sunday and it was heaps better, off on hols Friday so hopefully the extra rest will help heal it... if not, off to physio to see if they can find out what it is!

Fuckety fuck
Right knee had been troubling me for a few months and yesterday it got really bad, and today it has locked up. Based on the pain and my having torn cartilage in both knees previously I am certain there is another tear and the broken bit is jamming my knee joint, I can't even straighten my leg.

I had forgotten how fucking painful this is.

Saw my GP yesterday - was amazed to get an appointment so quickly.
Tests indicate miniscus damage, but will need to get an x-ray to see if it's arthritis or bone floating in the knee. After that comes an MRI, and then arthroscopy unless it spontaneously heals.
Judging from the pain I don't see this spontaneously resolving itself.

mri shows a large tear to medial meniscus and two cysts on the meniscus
operation time...

• #1295
Was there a cause, or just the wear and tear of age?
-
• #1296
tore it dancing in my mid twenties and had an operation then
i now have osteo arthritis and general wear and tear, so would put it down to having had a relatively active life, but also now being old and overweight

Ouch, been there, done that!

I've narrowed my knee pain down to being caused by squats or supta virasana.
-

supta virasana.
in which case you should be doing it supported on bolsters and blocks

Girlfriend had the suggestion of trying some yoga as we can do it in the flat (and do it for free via Youtube) and my knee pain has pretty much disappeared completely after a few nights. I used to stretch before and after a ride, but doing yoga stretching is a lot more controlled and has seemed to have done the trick for now. Not saying it'll be for everyone, but might be worth giving it a bash to see what happens.
Yeah I'm in the process of making the mental adjustment atm. Sundays race cancelled, next Sundays about to be, holiday then with luck early base training.
