Is there any difference between the Rat Pass from Compass and the Maxxis DTH in feel on pavement. Anyone ridden both and can compare?

u mad? totally diff tyres bro .. 200g weight diff to begin with thats 400g for a pair .. compass will be supple. Horses for courses .. what are you planning to use them for?

I wouldn't call Rat Trap Pass race tyres. Put well over 1000km on mine, incl loaded touring in Wales on gravel roads and plenty of commuting and they barely look worn. Only one puncture thus far. And they ride epically well. Much better than the super-motos I had ages ago

I have just had to up my luggage allowance to 40kgs + 27kg bike as I couldn't fit it in 20kgs plus hand luggage. Went to buy the food yesterday, then last night tried to pack it all in using front roller panniers with no luck so have my light things in rear roller ortliebs on the front.

I'm starting to think I have gone a bit mad planning a trip like this, but I'm really using it as a test for the possibilities of bigger things in the future.

All I see, is a classic Thorn tourer, with classic touring kit....there is nothing wrong with it, or the kit he has......ok, it's not all bikepacking, but he is still bikepacking, no?

For all you know, he might have Ray Mears tucked up in that bag, to whittle him a house when he arrives.

I really like it, frame's an ace colour and it's good to see a set of XRs still rolling (contender for the most durable tyre ever?)

Doesn't change the fact that if you put the gear in the rack top bag in a frame bag, the whole thing would handle better.

12 days of food

Backpacking websites are good for planning lightweight meals. The longest unsupported/no resupply trip I've done was 10 days (on foot). Breakfast of porridge with powdered milk, butter & sugar and instant coffee. Lunch of trail mix and a flapjack or waffle. Dinner was a few blocks of instant noodles with butter, dehy vegetables and beef jerky, and chocolate for dessert.

I had a dehydrator but it broke - since then I have just used the oven and it's fine. You can buy those little hotel-breakfast-sized packs of butter for extra calories; they don't seem to go off even in hot weather.

What are you doing about water?

I suppose I am teaching you to suck eggs here as you seem to have it sorted. Make sure to give us a proper trip report!

Incidentally this all went into a 55l pack, although we did share a tent and billy between two. The key is to not take too many clothes - no duplicates!
