Does anyone own a Canyon?

  • Wavering: I can't decide between the Ultimate CF SLX, Cervelo R3 dentists chair or a classic Ritchey Road Logic which I can then afford to drip with top end drivel.

  • What sort of riding though?

If it were me I'd get the lightest and stiffest (R3?). But I do loads of climbing.
If I was racing (I am. Just not in a competitive manner). I'd be more tempted buy the Canyon (cheaper frameset?).
If I was just doing some fast mile munching and training. The Richie seems a Nice option.

Seems like an easy chioce once you decide what you're doing With it.

  • I think that's essentially what I'm struggling with SF. I race crits and road races. The Canyon is 2k f+f and is without a doubt the best frame in the line up but 2k is a lot to be racing on. The R3 is a bit cheaper at 1.7k but I don't think it's as good a race bike. The Ritchey can be built to race with a force group and a couple of well chosen carbon bits (superlogic seat post, stem and my FFWD f6r wheels) but I worry about the twisting forces in big efforts (1500 watts).

This is all with my previous Canyon which can be repaired (BB de bonded). If it can be fixed then that can be my race bike while I get something else for 'best bike'.

  • I say this but then I know people who have been raving on Look aerolights and Evo blacks with no trouble so maybe just bit the canyon after all...

  • Pretty sure the R3 would make a decent race bike. Arent they mad stiff?

Kinda temped to get a cheap Direct-from-China as my NeXT carbon roadie. My frameset is the one part of the bike I cant afford to replace.

  • Get the EVO black if thats an option then

  • Id get a second hand CAAD10 for crits and the canyon for sunday best. Cheap groupset on the CAAD and proper wheels for racing, then you wont worry about crashing it so much.

Unless you can afford to race on the canyon in which case do that

  • caad10 shimano 105 5700 and china carbon 60mm wheelset is the one

  • insurance monies are IN

  • having looked at the facts:

Canyon Ultimate CF SL ~1,000, 940g frame weight
Canyon Ultimate CF SLX ~2,000 790g frame weight
    Compared with...
    Cervelo R3 ~1700, 900g frame weight
    CAAD12, ~700, 1100g frame weight

Compare that with potential saving of 290g or 130g when moving to Dura Ace or Force (resp) over current Ultegra groupo. This SLX is going to have to be amazing to stack up. Hoping to test it soon alongside the Cervelo.

  • SL looks like best £ to gram if you are going for weight. With Force 22 and firecrest (or NSW if you want to be a #baller) should be good!

  • I've got a set of FFWD F6Rs, hand built and one of the best crash replacement policies on the planet. The reality of the situation is that I go through bikes and components somewhat so I don't generally buy 'baller' :)

  • CF SL plus Foce 22 and those wheels for sure! Wont it be cheaper than £1K with BC discount? If you HAVE to spend the whole amount then DA Di2.

  • same problem though, in the last 2-3 years I've broken 2 FD and 1 RD.

That said, I would choose a mechanical frameset now and switch to Force eTap when it's out. I do not understand why people are f*cking about with wires. Nor do I understand why Shimano sleep walked into not rethinking the whole shifter system with Di2. SRAM certainly have the brains there.

  • switch to Force eTap when it's out

Just get the big boy eTap!

  • £2,000 for a groupset? If I were going to throw money away I'd do it properly, with an 80th anniversary Super Record groupo.

  • If you're breaking shit don't buy DA Di2. Replacement bits are crazy money.

    Ultegra Di2 is amazing.

Dunno about crits. But in my races the absolute best thing on my bike is my sprint shifters. Make a real difference to tight pace line riding.

  • @benjam wait a couple months until all the 2016 otps start getting mad reduced at Pauls and Westbrooks etc

  • Where are you getting that price from?! Assume you've got brakes and cranks lying around, eTap is barely more than a grand from Wiggle with platinum.

  • Exactly my route. And even then I went Farsports on the race wheels and they've been spot on. Crashed a few weeks ago at LV and the dale ended up a bit dented, but I didn't shit myself I'd written off a nice carbon frame and wheels.

  • Pretty sure the R3 would make a decent race bike. Arent they mad stiff?

I've got a R2 (same frame, different fork) and have been doing some TT'ing on it as well as Audaxing and it's been great for both.
If I was doing Crits/Road Races again I'd probably do them on my Alu BMC though - been knocked off enough times by people not holding their line/not looking before moving out.

Looking at a TT bike for next year and this is more in my price range the SLX version. Don't think it's as a great a bargain as CW are making out though

  • Looks like they have started announcing their 2017 range. Looks like the 2016 range but more expensive.

  • I'd imagine Brexit will have put prices up, but it also looks as though Canyon are now trying to position themselves as a premium brand. As opposed to the cheaper order direct/cut out the middleman pitch they had previously.
Not sure how much luck they'll have with that in a competitive market place when their competitors bikes are readily available in lbs.
