I was riding out of London and had just crossed the Chilterns when it just stopped moving. The front was fine, but nothing at the back. I had a long weekend of riding in and around Wales planned, so wasn't best pleased to say the least.
Anyway, I was only about 15 miles out of Oxford so decided to head there to see if a bike shop could have a look and maybe give me details of someone at SRAM to contact. The first shop I found was Beeline Bicycles, a SRAM dealer, but when I got there the head mechanic was at lunch. They offered to look after the bike while I did the same and he'd have a quick look when he got back. When I returned, he confirmed that it was a terminal failure (the first he'd seen) and my weekend riding was over. Once I'd finished crying, we got chatting and it turns out that the shop's racing team is sponsored by SRAM and he's got a good relationship with the head of SRAM Europe.
Anyway, long story short, he had a word in the boss's ear and they agreed to warranty replace my dead mech for the one in their last remaining full group! Unbelievably generous of them and amazing service. They had me back on the road 30 mins later, disaster averted.
It does make me worry about the lack of spares available though and hope it's not long before they are.
My eTap rear derailleur died on me on Saturday.
