It's easy - Progressive do insurance on foreign DLs. You'll have to buy a year but you can pay by installments and when you cancel it, you'll get exactly the pro-rated refund minus a small charge. It's absurdly cheap compared to the UK.
I highly advise not buying anything too old that you can't fix yourself. There is no equivalent of the MOT in CA. Combine that with the sunny Californian, why fix today what might never break attitude and there are an unbelievable number of dodgy motors around. Getting anything esoteric worked on costs a packet and won't happen at all n the middle of nowhere.
Seems way too good to be true, either that or I'm just used to the daylight robbery conducted by UK companies... Starting at just over 400 USD for a year of coverage on a BMW 3 series.
Considering I'm 19 and have had a license for under a year that's insane.
It's a lot cheaper. Coverage is different though - check on the amount ($ value) - I'd say you'd be looking at around 1200 bucks for something sensible. Still wildly good value.
I pay about 800 per year for good coverage on a 330 and a camper van and have a Ca license now.

Otherwise, just join AAA and have fun!
