My draft of a Fixed build - Help appreciated

Posted on
  • Hello everyone,

I have been thinking about a fixed gear bike for quite a few years now and have decided to finally pull the trigger. First of all, I'd like to apologise if this has been posted in the wrong place!

Here are a rough list of the components I've been looking at and would appreciate thoughts and advice. I am roughly 175 cm tall and 53 / 54 cm bikes seem to fit me and I have a budget of around £800-1100. I will be mainly using the bike for enjoyment and eventually commuting in London.

Brothers Swift 2015 54 CM Frameset
    H Plus Son Archetype Road Rim 32H + 36H
Dia-Compe Gran Compe Front Track Hub - 32H + 36H (will this work? as both are "front"?)
Continental Gatorskin Folding Road Tyre 25 C
    Continental Quality Road Inner Tube 700 x 25 - 32 Race 28
Tange Bottom Bracket - would appreciate suggestions and advice on this!
Miche Fixed Track Sprocket + Lockring + Sugino Pista Crank (all 1/8) and either 48/18T or 42/16T
    HL 710 Single Speed Chain
Shimano Front Break 105 + Dirty Harry lever
    Oury Grips
Cinelli Ant Stem + Cinelli Pepper Bars (riser)
Deda RSx Seatpost 2014 (looking for something reasonably priced as all other components are quite dear)
    Hope QR Seat Post Clamp
    Charge Spoon Saddle
Token Track Toe Clip TK456 (I will usually be wearing trainers and don't want clip ins just yet)

All of this roughly equates to £950 plus a good lock and labour of wheel builds etc on top!

I welcome all comments as I know this a strong community of riders and appreciate feedback!

    Many thanks,

    N

  • Current projects forum is that way >>>

  • QR seat post clamps are for mountain bikes and having your saddle stolen.

  • Using two front hubs means no drive train. I would suggest using a rear hub at the rear for obvious reasons. You need a chain and cogs and something to attach the cog to, some way of propelling the bike.

  • 36/36 or 32/32 will be fine. No reason to have four less spokes on the fromt wheel. When descending your front wheel is taking the same kinds of forces as your rear wheel when ascending.

  • If you're going to use this bike for commuting, you might be better off selling your wheel parts, skipping the wheel build and just getting a pair of Halo Aerorage/Aerotrack.

Also, if you're riding fixed in the city, you'll want to avoid 48/18. Google 'skid patches'.

  • Commuting is the second use in my opinion, I've always loved cycling and I am really looking to build this bike for enjoyment. I imagine I'll use it for commuting when I am more confident with my fixed abilities.

I haven't purchased any of these components yet, however the H Plus Son have been recommended to me but quite a few people now!

Would you recommend 42/16 for general usage?

  • Would there be any negative of 36 rear and 32 front? It was suggested to me to have the back wheel with more spokes for just extra strength, plus it looks quite nice ! :$

  • I thought thats where these components come in to play:

"Miche Fixed Track Sprocket + Lockring + Sugino Pista Crank " ?

    I might be mistaken.. ?

  • I thought as much when i saw the quick release! Is there something cheaper and more recommended?

  • I'm not sure how to move this post! Thank you for the heads up!

  • Any standard seat tube collar. Your frameset may well come with one

  • A front Hub isn't threaded for a sprocket or freewheel and has 110 mm spacing as opposed to 120 mm on the rear usually (most track frames).
