I think I loaded it once during the race but it never seemed to update so I stopped looking at it.

I think track is what it measures by straight line from point to point and route is what it thinks you will have done based on where the roads are that you would have been likely to have used between the points.
I don't know whether it includes dirt tracks in its assesment of likely route...

The figures on Freeroute seem more sensible (although i've not cross-checked and my Garmin didn't record every bit - when it wasn't working or I forgot to switch it on!)
