So here is the roller in its latest guise. This is the second set of risers I am trying in the last month. More of a swept style, only been on a couple of days.

Anyone tried using a steamroller as a makeshift mtb? I'm tempted at hitting the gravel roads and trails around here but no monies around for a new bike. Planning to put on some 38s and wide risers and hope for the best

Rollers are very capable of light offroading.
A lot depends on your ability and how rad you want to get :)Loads of choice on 35mm cx tyres, which can take a rim dinging hammering.
Pictures not a roller, but a 1" quill stem lugged steel frame, the fork is a bit flappy and the quill stem and frame, and old EA50 bars, the old brakes are terrible. Flat pedals, 35mm tyres, milk carton mudguards and make sure your brakes are in good order and you can have a lot of fun.
Haven't got a roller yet as the old raleigh hasn't died yet and i have the KM for proper mountain stuff :)

Having done some reading my main worry is getting some decent calliper brakes that has room for some 35 tyres. Any recommendations?

Here's one in the wild.

Paul Racer is probably your best bet... You can probably buy a super cheap 2nd hand MTB for the same money

There is chatter and photos of tyre clearance a few pages back..........
I went through it myself as i was looking to get a roller.
38mm will just fit.
35mm would be better.
30-32mm cx tyres if it's wet.
Your asking it do something that maybe a crosscheck would be a better buy for you. It's a comprimise on mud clearance in the calipers and tyre size, if you think you need the bigger or up to 45mm then look into a Crosscheck. Many have gone offroad and even raced CX on Rollers you just have to live with road bias frame limitations. -

Tektro R559? the Steamroller used to come with the R538, but I was wondering if the R559 can be used since the advantage is that it got massive tyres clearance.
If you got a Steamroller, measure the distance from centre of brake bolt to centre of rim to see what the length, if it's 55mm or more, then it'll fit.

Thanks all, much appreciated!
Already have a Cross-check, but it's two sizes too big to be any good on the trails. I got it as a relaxed child-carrying bike so it's loaded with child seats and big back swept bars.
As i'd need basically everything part from the frame, I think it'd be cheaper to just get something second hand. Alternatively build something up based on a on-one inbred... choices choices choices
Anyone got a karate monkey or krampus for sale... :)

Totally doable, lack of braking power was the only real problem, if its wet and there's a sketchy corner on a slope, you're going into the bushes, also my hands and arms were in agony after a day of riding, some decent brake pads, soft grips and some gloves helped, spend your money there, would of also preferred wider bars for the climbs
putting a CC or stragger fork on there wouldn't be a bad idea

I recently got my hands on a steamroller, and while I'm enjoying it, I can't help but feel like my cross-check (currently relegated to parents garage) will do the fixed gear winter bike job better - bigger tyres and better brakes.
Agreed that a cross-check fork would be a good improvement for mounts and braking, but what effect would the longer a-c have? -

I'd looked at different fork options with a 32c tyres (26 trucker/straggler are disc only, 26 trucker probably too short for guards) and done some maffs...

He's from Helsinki and he made the bag himself. And the fork is original steamroller fork with welded disc brake mounts, there's a lot of rollers with these here - thinking about doing the same thing, winter is coming...
Here's my steamroller from pre-event ride Hamburg - Copenhagen
and race mode ;)
