• I managed to wrap the bars in Alcantara and I really like how it turned out. That being said, it is a really difficult material to work with since it won't stretch + some other features which made it quite a challenge to get a proper finish. I'll write some kind of tutorial when I find the time, in case anyone is interested.

  • Black wheels might look nice as well

    Black Shamals

  • Looks awesome. Frame is fantastic; gorgeous paint.

Rear derailleur cable isn't in the cable guide at the bottom bracket though:

Luckily you can just push it in there!

  • I'm 100% sure that this will not change the fact that I love my road bikes, rest assured. However, having finished the lo pro, I realized that I wanted to try out different kinds of bikes with different characteristics + the forum definitely did it's part. I just want to see for myself whether I like it or not :)

  • Ha, thanks for pointing that out, I didn't notice it yet. The funny thing is that it was like that in the seller's ebay images and it really bugged me how someone could be that stupid ;)
    ed. resolved!

  • @PhilDAS I see what you did there :) Will think about it, give me a shout out if you see some for sale...

  • I didn't notice it yet.

That's funny, especially since you got such a prominent picture of it. I guess you're too busy with focussing on getting the right shot, that you don't really pay attention to what's in front of you! But fortunately it's an easy fix.

  • I guess it must have slipped out when I tightened the screw on the rear mech since it gives the cable some slack when you apply torque. Still, somewhat of a fail :D In my defense, I took the photo with the front camera of the iphone so I didn't look at it directly...

  • That sir is a damned nice bike. Should be proud

  • I haven't realised how great the conditions are of the frame!
It looks NOS. Lovely Scatto sir, lovely indeed.

  • Thanks! I am, a little :) But I dedicate this build to the forum as it was the main source of inspiration!
@anidel Ha! I was waiting for your comment, thanks for the kind words and the input throughout the build :) I'm really happy with the frame's condition, indeed. The forks were a bit rusty but that was easily solved with the ol' tinfoil + coke trick. Other than that it only has a handful of superficial scratches in the clear coating. I'm really happy that the colour of the veloflex tires matches the decals (which technically aren't decals as they are painted on).
Initially I wanted to get stradas or vittorias but the gumwalls on these are a bit more yellow/orange-ish so I think the veloflex gumwalls work better in combination with the decals. I'm also glad I went for a black saddle and 'bartape' rather than white or purple.

  • Bar tape looks really good, never heard of Alcantara before and the bike as a whole is superb.
Did you buy the Alcantara in that size or cut it yourself?

  • @SideshowBob Cheers! I bought a rather large piece of 1x1,5m on the internet. It was surprisingly cheap (8€), given that even luxury car manufacturers like Porsche will charge you extra for an optional alcantara interior. It's basically a synthetic suede which is really light and offers a lot of grip. But like I said, it's a bit of a challenging material to work with, I found it more complicated then leather and it took 3 attempts to get a finish like that. On the upside, it's cheaper and better looking than most other bartapes, at least imho. We'll see about wear, usually it's not a problem in cars but it could be that the Alcantara which I ordered from the online shop is not of the best long-term quality. I took a few photos during the process and will write a little tutorial on how to do it in the next couple of days, so stay put :)
ed. just checked - Porsche will charge you an extra 583,10€ if you want an Alcantara Steering wheel in your 991. I'll do your bars for a houndred ;) Jk

  • Quick mock-up with black wheels.

  • Like the Atlanta more

  • The black wheels are only borrowed from the Colnago and they're 7 speed, so the Atlantas are staying. I think I prefer the look of the black wheels though cause they make the colours of the frame pop even more.

ed. mh, I guess I'm 50/50 and don't have a real preference. But I have dark rims on all of my bikes except for the Olmo, so I'll leave it with the Atlantas for the sake of diversity.

  • You need to keep those black wheels, looks soo good with them, really does make the paint pop

  • Glad you like it! But these are c-record 7 Speed (freewheel) and thus not compatible with an 8 speed casette. But I think I'll keep an eye out for a pair of suitable black wheels and ditch the plan to get shamals.

  • Yeah sorry, kinda didn't read properly due to the fluro fades goodness haze I was in haha! Definitely stick with the black wheel plan, shamals are way to shouty for this bike

  • It happens to the best of us ;)
The guy who offered a pair of mavic sup ceramics laced to record hubs isn't getting back to me :( Got another project in the making, a 60s track bike so the black set of wheels doesn't have priority atm but I'll keep an eye out and keep the thread updated :)

  • The TT bike got a disc and I'll be getting a pair of ITM Dual CX to round it off :)

  • very nice

  • Covered an old Laser saddle with Alcantara for the TT bike. It's a lot easier with alcantara since the material is less rigid than leather and doesn't need to be soaked. Only took me about 20mins.
