On a different note, anyone has the iPad Pro? Tempted by it...

AirDrop. Does this only work between Apple devices? Are there any workarounds? Specifically for phones?

I like iPhones in their way and our workflow in the studio is set up around Apple but I can't help but think the phones in particular are a bit shit at certain things. I've cracked the screen on mine and was thinking about a replacement (especially after @spotter 's gorgeous photos he takes on his). So was toying with trying a new phone - presume Android (of which I know absolutely nothing) but I use AirDrop all the time :/ If there was a good alternative (we have pro dropbox/wetransfer/google/ondrive accounts I suppose..) it would make the move a lot easier.

Very nice, very slick in use. Depends what you got though. A huge step up from iPad 3 which where I was coming from. I got the 9.7 btw, not the massive one.

2 unrelated mac q's:

• My dad wants to get rid of my mum's old mac tower. He said it's a G4 but it's in a perforated aluminium case, which I thought means it's a G5? Anyway, the question is, dependent on specs is it useful for anyone? Possibly me? He thinks it runs OS9. I'm not sure. But if it does, can it be made to run OSX? It has a decent looking apple screen of some kind too, aluminium stand, white plastic sides with aluminium wrapping around front to back. It's all a bit vague at the moment because it's surrounded by so much stuff I can't really get to it to turn it on etc.

• I am currently using a 2010 15" MBP running El Capitan. I jumped several versions all in one go 6 months ago (thanks for the help @chrisbmx116 ) and it's generally better but slower to start, and a bit slower to start applications. It's still blackscreening ocassionally, but unlike before, it knows when it's done it and automatically restarts. Something is still borked. Something to do with graphics/display triggers it - I try and avoid using space-bar preview when I have apps running as that seems to do it, but there's no consistency.

Tempted by an SSD upgrade, but suspect whatever's broken isn't the HD so also wondering whether to just bite the bullet and buy a new laptop. But the choice completely baffles me.

Maybe I should take the G4/5 tower and screen and actually try and set up a decent workspace at home, I'm an itinerant cafe worker most of the time and most apps is okay but CAD on a laptop is a bit of a fucker.

All this chat about track bars and other magic, I am completely out of the loop...

I've had the large one since December and I love it, I'd been wanting an electronic drawing pad for years and it's answered my prayers.

find out what version of the Mac Pro it is, if it's a 1.1 or 2.1 officially you can only get it to work with osx 10.7, if it's 3.1 or later, you should be able to run osx 10.11..

okay. sounds good, should be able to get at it in a few days...

Edit to add: this is the MBP.
disk utility says "incorrect number of file hard links"
then HD is corrupt and needs repair.
has First Aid repaired it then? or it needs something else.
2nd pass with First Aid looks okay.

Find another G5 tower, and...

I am tempted by the large one, might hold out for a couple of months see if they bring out a new one...

The other half has the smaller one, it's very light and incredibly powerful. Would have missed the larger screen for drawing on though, it does get reasonably heavy with the front and rear cover. I like the larger screen for watching a bit of sport while I'm away from the tv too.

Do you both have the Pencil as well? How good is it? Can it be comparable in some ways to a Wacom? I have never used a Cintiq but I do like my Intuos... I know the iPad is a long way away from being on par with a proper computer set up, but as an on the go quick and dirty edit / drawing machine, that effective enough paring with the right apps?

Can I generate an app-specific password without changing my main Apple password first?

@amey, @6pt, am gonna hold onto my Air for the time being, as I am not sure what Mac I am likely to get from work, and it might not be till early part of next year now, currently looking to be a 15inch in which case I'd wanna keep my Air for probability. Sorry for messing about.

anyone know of a good mac repair centre in town? my macbook pro boots but just hangs and will not load anything up.

Sorry about the delay, we both have the pencil. Mrs Airhead doesn't use hers because she might lose it! Bless. I have had the Cintiq for a few years and it's superb with Painter X but a large number of cables tie you to whichever computer you are using to drive it so it's not much fun to use on the sofa which is where I wanted a sketchpad. The Pencil is comparable to the Wacom pen in term of usability, maybe a little better but of course no buttons.

The downside to the iPad for me is the lack of Google Sketchup. Otherwise the top apps available are brilliant, challenging Painter X for results but maybe a little less mental to use.

I've never used an iPad before this one but I no longer use my 13" retina MacBook and I've not missed it since day 1. However I do use a Mac tower for my main storage, typing, music making purposes so the iPad is definitely a sidearm. Battery life is very impressive and it's way quicker than the laptop, although it's of course running a different OS so the comparison is moot.

Thanks mate, very useful insight. :-) Shame work won't get me an iPad Pro, as it's not a computer. Fair point I guess.

I can imagine being in a situation where I will get the base model 15 inch (which is still a very good machine, don't get me wrong), then I will be stuck with it as I can't sell it and probably won't use it as I will have gotten the iPad Pro by then and I do also have a top specs 15 inch that I use the same was as your Tower, which I won't want to sell.

But then again, freebie is freebie, can't complain.
