Peter Sagan, road racing world champ, chose to ride the MTB race at the Olympics. The Slovak had a good reason. "I'm bored with road racing."
Peter Sagan just signed with Bora cycling team, but the most colourful rider in the pro peloton made some surprising statements on a Slovakian sports web site
"I'm not getting any satisfaction from road racing", says the world champion.
"I have ridden great and successful races on the road and of course I hope to continue doing that, but to be honest it's boring. I am not getting satisfaction from it."
"It's very unfair. On the road, it's not always the best that wins. You can be the best all day and have someone else winning by an inch because they have more luck or beter helpers. Okay, in the mountains, it is usually the best climber that wins, but in other races it's more like a lottery. "
At the Olympics Sagan chose to ride the MTB contest. "I'm really having fun on that bike. You can take more risks. The two disciplines are incomparable. Like surfing and skydiving."
Sagan didn't finish his Olympic race after two punctures. Doesn't he regret his choice?
"At the Olympics, the best man did not win. That was Nibali, not Van Avermaet. If Nibali hadn't crashed, that group would have been on the podium. All climbers. Nobody would have said I would have stood a chance."
