i have never tried it but i know it has been done, how much success came with it i cant tell you.
id say fine for a pub beater, but you'll never quite achieve that 'top level pose' with modified cut down components, and lets be honest, posing is very important :) -

I've done it. used the same length BB. Just a straight swap.
I chose to file off the inner ring shoulders, but it's not necessary and it won't make them pista cranks anyway... -

What he said, takes no time at all with a file, add a few quid for anodising and nobody will know it ain't pista!

Sounds good enough for me, cheers! I know they won't be real pista cranks but for the time being it should do until I find something more suitable :) They are going on a bike which was initially purchased as a beater but turned out to be a diamond in the rough. Got the cranks together with campy pedals for 50€ and in combination with a pista ring I think it'll tick all the boxes for me :)

posing is not really that important for me. 99% of my friends don't give a shit about bikes and people on the street won't notice the difference. That being said, there's a good chance my OCD will bother sooner or later :)

In the same vein: I've got a 107mm Token BB which came with a set of Campagnolo Pista cranks and gave a 42mm chainline. Can I assume that using that BB with a set of Strada cranks of the same vintage, would give me an outside chainline of 42mm and thus make me able to use it with a coaster hub?

Wait, why wouldn't you use the Pista cranks if you already got them? Wanna sell? Which vintage are we talking?
And to answer your question: probably yes according to this:
The forgings for the old 144mm BCD Strata and Pista arms were identical; only the final machining was different. You can use a Strata arm as a track crank but depending on your frame and bottom bracket you may have clearance problems with the inner chainring ledge and the chainstay. If that happens you can simply file off the ledge so it is flush with the rest of the arm. A true Pista arm will be counterbored so the stack bolt sits flush with the arm; without the counterbore the back of the bolt will rise about a millimeter above the arm surface. This is seldom a problem, and if it is it can be remedied by spacing the bottom bracket so the arm sits a millimeter further out.

@Colin_the_Bald
How much did you guys pay for getting the cranks anodised? -
• #10
I've got nothing where they'd fit visually. The Strada arms are going on a frame I'm selling.
But they're mismatched, though it not that big a deal, since you'll only see one side at a time ;)
And yes, I'm looking to sell them, but I'm in Copenhagen, but maybe @Hulsroy could act as a courier, if they need to go to London...

I'm located in Germany, so no need for a courier. Will PM you!

Or I could have the pistas and you can buy my filed stradas for cheaper...?
-
• #13
Cheers, thanks for the offer but I already bought a pair of strada cranks and the more I think about it the more I fear that I will have to get real pista cranks sooner or later anyway. But just out of curiosity, how much would you want for them and which length are they?
-
• #14
Depends on what Jesper wants for his pistas... ;)

He asked for 70gbp and I told him that I'd take them if the square taper hole (or whatever it's called) isn't too fucked. Looks a bit battered in the pictures but it's probably not a problem. But if you guys are danish friends - is it racist of me to assume that you all know each other, jk - then I'd completely understand if you make it a deal among friends since I'd probably do the same.

You take them.
We are friends, but I think they are more suited for your project than mine. (for the falcon, right?) -

Cheers :) Exactly, the birdie needs some wings :)
I'm planming to use super record strada cranks on a track bile for obvious reasons - got them for cheap and I'm to cheap to spend 200€ on pista cranks. Has anyone ever done it? Is there a difference regarding the dishing? Will it be neccessary to cut off the excess which holds the smaller chainring in place so as to have enough clearance with the chainstays? I'd be happy to hear your input!
