• I don't have any problem with recumbents, I think they're great and I wish I had space to keep one and so learn to ride it. They are a little in a different category, though, as they confer multiple advantages on long-distance rides, and you probably need to set up different records for different basic bike technologies. Recumbents have been throwing curveballs at upright bikes since they were first invented, and I don't think that's going to change anytime soon.

    Steve obviously wasn't riding a racing recumbent but a trike for rehabilitation. Trikes are much slower than two-wheeled recumbents.
