Although I wanted him to do well, I think it's just as well he flatted and didn't podium, imagine all those poor mud-chuggers getting beat by a roadie in the Limpics.
Watching it he was beasting it around but on the technical sections looked uncharacteristically tentative and noticably slower, lack of technique that may have caused the puncture. At least that is what MTBers are saying.

Let me find you the video where Sagan puts the Cannondale F-SI through its paces...
Here we go. He's entirely credible as a 'mud-chugger'.

Clearly didn't have the ability to podium and he knows it himself:

lack of technique
we rarely see him pulling that kind of facial expression on the road, yes

Oh believe I know, but in an elite field on that first lap through the technical sections he looked slower. And reading comments from the MTB crowd online, they were pointing at his technique. I mean he hasn't rode MTb competitively for 8 years.
Not saying he's shite mind. Just compared to the top MTbers who do it week in, week out he was slower. That said they were plenty of punctures for the full-time muddies.

I would hazard a guess that the missing left crank and whatever the hell has happened to his swingarm is what's causing that expression...

translated this from sporza.be, who reported this is what he said to a Slovak cycling website
Sagan: "Not really enjoying road racing"
"In road racing, it's not always the best that wins."
24/08/2016Peter Sagan, road racing world champ, chose to ride the MTB race at the Olympics. The Slovak had a good reason. "I'm bored with road racing."
Peter Sagan just signed with Bora cycling team, but the most colourful rider in the pro peloton made some surprising statements on a Slovakian sports web site
"I'm not getting any satisfaction from road racing", says the world champion.
"I have ridden great and successful races on the road and of course I hope to continue doing that, but to be honest it's boring. I am not getting satisfaction from it."
"It's very unfair. On the road, it's not always the best that wins. You can be the best all day and have someone else winning by an inch because they have more luck or beter helpers. Okay, in the mountains, it is usually the best climber that wins, but in other races it's more like a lottery. "
At the Olympics Sagan chose to ride the MTB contest. "I'm really having fun on that bike. You can take more risks. The two disciplines are incomparable. Like surfing and skydiving."
Sagan didn't finish his Olympic race after two punctures. Doesn't he regret his choice?
"At the Olympics, the best man did not win. That was Nibali, not Van Avermaet. If Nibali hadn't crashed, that group would have been on the podium. All climbers. Nobody would have said I would have stood a chance." -

That's not his swingarm, it's a red/orange course marker:
