there's been something i've meant to go and take photos of for ages now, and this week was the perfect subject....but I still never made it.

Drones live out their lives inside beehives for most of the time and either die very quickly after inseminating a queen or are turfed out of hives when they're no longer needed, after which they're unable to fend for themselves, so those are more likely reasons for it to die.

I initially thought it was a fly because of the large eyes but then thought they looked a little like a drone's. If you had another picture of the body it would be easier to tell, but you've probably already established to your satisfaction that it was a drone.
