Finding a touring double chainset.

  • Hi, hope I am posting this in the right place.

I am trying to build myself a tourer on the cheap, I have got a shimano groupset with bar end shifters which is 2x9, with a 12-27 on the back. I am struggling to find a chainset with the right size rings.

I reckon a 42/26 should be OK, but can't seem to find one. MTB ones seem to mostly be 22/32 which is probably a bit small as I will be using the bike for unladen commuting as well.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  • Find a triple and don't use the outer ring. Replace it with a bash guard or something.

Modern MTB double cranks can be had in 40/28 combo but are pricey.

  • Do bar end shifters have indexing for the front derailleur? In my (very limited) experience, they've always been friction shift, so you could run a double or triple.

  • I can switch between friction and sis on the front shifter, does it not need to pull more cable for a triple though? Would rather avoid buying yet another FD if possible.

If I used a triple with a bashguard would the chainline be off by a long way?

Chainline will be fine. Issue might be with the derailure not being able to shift inwards enough to drop the chain on to the little ring?

If you found a square taper tripple you could mess about with different axle lengths until this wasn't a problem.

  • How much do you want to spend?

Decore tripple with a 48t big ring sounds the most sensible (that's what I bought). CRC used to have them for c.£60.

  • Otherwise there's a PX one but the inner is 34t.

If I got a triple chainset and a triple FD, I assume this would be fine with the shifter in friction mode?

I saw the PX one but I reckon I need a bit lower than 34 teeth, I have that as the small ring on my roadbike with a 28 on the back , and although that is more than enough unladen I don't fancy 34/27 with touring kit.

  • Most likely...

Easiest way to find out if the derailure you have will work will be to back off the limit screws as far as pos then find out where the cage is horizontally. If this roughly lines up with the inner most ring on your triple chainset of choice then you are good.

  • Will have to buy a triple chainset first...

Maybe I will just get a triple FD at the same time, I can get a Sora triple chainset for £40 quid and a triple FD for another 12 off ribble so might just do that. I was hoping to have the bike built by middle of next week and do a bit of local touring over the following days and weekend.

This is all assuming that a 30/27 will be low enough gearing, I hope so!

Ditch the 12-27 for a 12-32 and you got similar range with a compact.

What's stopping you from using a larger cassette? derailleur?

  • I use a 46/34 double stronglight chainset on a 107 mm bottom bracket. At the back, I use a 12-34 9 speed cassette with a shimano deore rear mech. My lowest gear is 27'' - plenty low enough for carrying an ageing fat boy and 20 pounds plus of gear up hills . I use barend shifters and the whole set up works well.

I imagined the deraillur was stopping me, but looking at it the cage is really long. It's 85mm c-c of the jockey wheels. Thats 15mm longer than the sora on my roadbike which is running 12-28. I am assuming that means it is "long cage" and according to sheldon can take up to a 34t sprocket. Thanks Edscoble, this may be the answer...

Edit: Also, I am assuming a 9 speed MTB cassette 11-34 will fit on a road wheel no problem right?

Yep shimano or SRAM will do.

  • Dredging this. Any new double chainset options lately? Seen the pricey sugino one but maybe there's more.
