I'm smallish so probs 26 or 27.5.
Under £1000, nearer £800 would be nice.
What are the go-to options?
For your money these are supposed to be very, very good.

http://paulscycles.co.uk/ usually has some good stuff in their sales but £1000 wont get you far.
Lots of used 26" AM / Trail bikes kicking around if you fancy going down that route

If you're patient a 26" can be bought or built up pretty cheap. Mines coming along nice and cheaply.
At under a grand you're best served looking at complete bikes though.
