Stripped Crank/Pedal Thread

Posted on
  • Cycling home last night, my pedal somehow developed a wobble to the crank arm.
I discovered that the threads on the drive side crank have totally stripped.
Can anything be done with this? Re-tapping in any way?
Or is it just for the bin?

  • Never tried one but there's something called helicoil. It works by drilling out the damaged thread and then the insert is screwed in.You can buy kits on eBay and some bike shops stock them.
No idea what it costs so need to balance the cost against new/2nd hand cranks.

    Good luck

  • Helicoil is a pretty horrendous fix, never going to be as good as original and a faff and half to do.

Unless the cranks are some super rare model or sentimentally valuable I'd be replacing.

  • i used that happening on my roadie as an excuse to upgrade my cranks

  • With square taper cranks - what is the best way to avoid this happening?

  • i would never helicoil it, theres a better method using a bigger tap to make it oversize then bonding in a proper insert like http://highpath.co.uk/ can do but in all reality id probably just source a replacement crank arm. To avoid this happening i grease the pedal thread and insert it by hand slowly turning it the wrong way until you feel it find the step where the first thread starts and then carefully wind it in by hand, on a good condition thread a pedal spanner should only be needed for the final torque as the flange butts up to the pedal arm.

  • The lost in the third world solution to this, if a tap doesn't work, is to start what's left of the thread and then force it in with some solder wrapped round the threads.

Your old dad's way would be to get a guy in maintenance to blob in some TIG weld and re-cut a rough but useable thread.

I would just buy a new one though, the thread insert isn't all that cheap.

Touch wood, it's not something that's ever happened to me.
