i would never helicoil it, theres a better method using a bigger tap to make it oversize then bonding in a proper insert like http://highpath.co.uk/ can do but in all reality id probably just source a replacement crank arm. To avoid this happening i grease the pedal thread and insert it by hand slowly turning it the wrong way until you feel it find the step where the first thread starts and then carefully wind it in by hand, on a good condition thread a pedal spanner should only be needed for the final torque as the flange butts up to the pedal arm.
