  • Columbus mud disc fork arrived for a new project. Thought ordering without paint would be fine but I'm worried it might suffer water damage or chips to the bare carbon. Should I spray on some clearcoat before riding it?

  • Water doesn't damage carbon .. It's UV or when you break the fibers that a setup for failure is introduced.

You need to use a UV resistant clear coat .. or use a specific carbon polish / wax which has a UV protection additive

  • What exactly will UV do? Do standard carbon components always use UV protecting clearcoat?

I'm more worried about small chips and knocks breaking fibres and leading to much bigger problems

  • Water doesn't damage carbon

While this is true, it's the polymer matrix which is at risk, and it turns out that adding water to the mix alongside UV exposure does significantly accelerate the matrix erosion
