Tubulars tubulars!

Posted on
  • so i've got an old 700c tri-spoke which on I seem to be forever replacing the tubulars, riding for about a year/6 months before puncturing then taking forever to replace myself which is a real mission and I'm sure I'm not doing it to the best quality.
So I have a few queries

    • I'm looking for one brand new unused tubular that I can buy from you, happy for mid range between £15-30 let me know what you have
    • Can anyone recommend somewhere or someone who won't charge me £30/40 (which I've been quoted at most bike shops) for fitting it

Am located in Kew Gardens SW London so nearer the better!

    cheers

  • Why would you wish to pay anyone to fit a Tubular? Its about a 10 minute job and requires some glue or tub-tape.

I'm sure there are youtube videos showing you how, or find a local enthusiast who can show you.
    There are only 2 challenges with fitting a tub;
    1) stretching it beforehand so it fits easily (ideally done a few days beforehand and held on the rim before you glue it)
    2) getting it straight on the rim

in reality, I find it no more fiddly than fitting a tight unwired clincher.

  • These are pretty hard to beat for the price

These are pretty hard to punture

both have an extra 20% discount at the moment.

I don't know how many miles you are doing a year, but I would be more than happy with a puncture a year !

They aren't that difficult to replace

    or even repair

I save up mine and repair them in winter,it can be quite therapeutic .

    Good Luck !

  • I've got 3 new black vittoria rallys 25mm, how does £25 posted sound?

If its a front then just use tape. If there is already glue on the rim then spend a night cleaning it with various tools and chemicals, then tape a tub on. Ive used Miyata tubular tape for nearly all my front tubular wheels, does the job and doesn't leave a mess.

I have one of these you can have for £15 posted if interested. Covered approx. 50mi- Tread looks near unused.

  • yeah been doing my own tubs for about 5 years now but figured I'm probably not doing them as well as someone who knows all their stuff, not doing many miles at all just using the bike to get to uni (5 miles) on and off, seems to take me a while and spread out over a few days, and most recently got a puncture day after repairing it so that was a kick in the teeth, got the money at the moment but not the time so just thought i'd ask.

    BigH are your tubs unused?

only have experience using rim cement, normally Vittoria Mastik, is tape much easier?

also been using goo-gone to clear old glue

  • Hi, I've got one of those Vittoria Rally tubs, boxed brand new that I don't need...

  • Brand new unused, 2 have been stretched.
Tape is a lot easier but only really suitable for general road riding

  • I've got two tubs in my parts cupboard that need to go - Bontrager race lite 22's if I remember, and brand new - pm me if interested!

  • seems to take me a while and spread out over a few days

Shouldn't be taking you this long to replace a tub. As long as the tub has been pre-stretched, it doesn't take longer than an hour really.
1-2 layers of glue on the base tape depending on tub, 1 layer on rim, mount and centre. Pump up to 120psi, leave overnight, ride.

  • Yep will take these please, PM coming
